Dual Electricity/Propane Heat: Heatpump not coming on

socarrat99
Community Member

We have a dual electricity/propane heatpump system and only the electricity seems to be powering the heat. The blower is not coming on with the nest thermostat. The wiring for the old Westinghouse thermostat was conventionally wired ie, no OB wire but the heatpump was definitely working before. Any clues on how to wire the nest correctly to use the dual power source?

Hi socarrat99,

Thanks for reaching out and we're sorry for the delay.

For us to get a better look on what's happening, a photo of your current wiring setup will be helpful.

I hope to hear from you soon.

Regards,

Ryan

Hi Ryan,

How can I attach an image to this? I see the camera above but its looking for code? Thanks Scott

Hi Ryan,

So the heat is working just fine but only using the normal electric power and not turning on the heat pump at all. I believe the heat pump should turn on when the outside temp falls below a certain temp. I did take a photo of the wiring with the old Westinghouse thermostat and will take a photo of the new wiring if I can figure out how to send you a photo via this form. Thanks, Scott

Hi socarrat99,

Thanks for the update.

Once you click on reply, you will then see the camera icon and it will allow you to select a file from your computer to attach to your message.

Sorry to be dense Ryan, but when I click on the camera it gives me a form with the following fields to complete: Source, Image Description, Dimensions, and then another field that says Constrain Proportions under it. Is it looking for the source code to the image? Obviously I attach documents and images all day long but not sure what this is asking for. Is it because I am using a Mac with an M1 processor? Anyway to just send you the images in an email or text?

Hey socarrat99,

Thanks for uploading these photos. I am curious to find out more about the heat pump details as the blue wire is connected to the W1 terminal.

I am sorry to ask you this favor, but could you take a look and take a photo of your terminal block from the HVAC so that we could verify the wiring connection (esp. the blue wire). I am thinking that this would be the answer we're looking for.

Best,

Ryan

Hi Ryan, you mean look inside the HVAC unit itself? Scott

Hey socarrat99,

Yes, that would give us an idea of where the blue wire is connected to.

Also, attached a photo of the terminal block that shows the wire configurations.

Regards,

Ryan

Ryan,

One problem might be that when I did the Nest setup on the app, I set it as a non heatpump because there was no wire connected to the OB terminal. Do you think that could cause the problem? Maybe if I do a reset and this time say yes its a heat pump even though the wiring on the old thermostat was wired to the conventional terminals?

Hi socarrat99,

Thanks for the update.

That's one of the errors we're normally getting when we select the wrong equipment type, heat source type. You could try to go to settings > equipment > select the right heat source and type. If this isn't an option, try to do a complete reset and do the setup process again, this time select the heat pump as your equipment type.

Let us know how it goes by replying to this thread.

Best regards,

Ryan
