Eco turned off and A/C turned on automatically

I have a Nest thermostat, model is Display-2.12, and I have enrolled in the Rush Hour rewards for several years now and had a new issue today where the thermostat ended Eco mode, turned on the A/C and set the temperature to 22C. Note that I have disabled all the automation features such as auto-schedule and home/away assist. My typical practice is that on days I do not need A/C, I'll enable Eco so the furnace fan can still run on its schedule. Another note, Eco temperatures are set to 10C (lower limit) and off (for upper limit). Today, being a cooler day and having the windows open, I was not impressed when the A/C started on its own. Has anyone else experienced something similar? Shouldn't the thermostat stay in Eco until I disable it, considering the automation has been disabled? Thanks.

Hi, @beanboy,

Thank you for reaching out to the community. It must be incredibly frustrating to have your Nest thermostat malfunction, overriding Eco settings and turning on the A/C despite disabled automation. I understand how disappointing and inconvenient this must be, especially on a cooler day when you’re trying to enjoy the fresh air. I’m happy to help and find a solution.

To effectively troubleshoot, please provide the following information:

  • What type of thermostat do you have?
  • When did the problem start?
  • What other strange symptoms have you experienced since the problem started?
  • Are there any error messages?
  • Would you mind sharing a picture of your wiring configuration?
  • When was the last maintenance check for your HVAC system?
  • Has there been any recent changes or upgrades to your HVAC system?

In the meantime, please follow these steps:

  • Even though you've disabled auto-schedule and Home/Away Assist, there might be other hidden automation or routines affecting your thermostat. Examine the Nest app for any lingering settings.
  • Check for Google Assistant routines: Ensure no Google Assistant routines are interfering with your thermostat settings.
  • Make sure the thermostat wires are completely inserted into the terminals.
  • To rule out an HVAC system problem, please follow these steps:
    • Turn off the HVAC system's power at the breaker switch.
    • Wait a few minutes, then turn the power back on.
    • If the problem reappears after a short time, please let me know.

Keep me posted.

Best regards,

Ana

    Nest Learning Thermostat, 2nd gen

    Tuesday August 13
  • What other strange symptoms have you experienced since the problem started?
    None

    Nope

  • When was the last maintenance check for your HVAC system?
New furnace and A/C installed around October 2023
  • Has there been any recent changes or upgrades to your HVAC system?
    Not recently, no

  • Even though you've disabled auto-schedule and Home/Away Assist, there might be other hidden automation or routines affecting your thermostat. Examine the Nest app for any lingering settings.
The only options enabled are Airwave and a fan schedule.
  • Check for Google Assistant routines: Ensure no Google Assistant routines are interfering with your thermostat settings.
While the thermostat is linked to my Google account, there are no automation tasks assigned to it.

I had two instances of this issue on August 13 and my assumption is that it was the Peak Perks program that had changed my thermostat mode.  Note that I have used a Nest thermostat and enrolled in Peak Perks since its inception, and have never had Eco mode cancelled.  I have now unrolled from the Peak Perks program, which is a shame because I was happy to help with reducing my energy usage during high demand periods.

Hi, @beanboy,

Thank you so much for your response. I really appreciate all the effort you've put in so far.

In this case, I recommend performing a factory reset and setting up the thermostat again.

If the thermostat turns on the AC and disables eco mode after 24 hours, please fill out this form. You'll need to follow advanced troubleshooting steps for your thermostat, which are best completed over the phone for security purposes.

Please keep me updated.

Best regards,

Ana
