My Thermostat is working fine and I bought it FROM NEST! I paid for it's remote control access.
Now google come along and decide I cannot connect to it and remote control it any longer for no other reason than they f-ing feel like it! This is an absolute blatant and disgraceful money grabbing attempt from google to force us to bin perfectly functional devices that we bought from other companies and buy a new google one! Anyone considering buying google devices needs to understand that they will turn off support for it after a few years and you should buy from some other provider. One with an environmental conscience and that cares about its customers rather than F-ing them over for a dollar.
What a damned disgrace, shame on you google!!

I agree 100%, this is ridiculous. My thermostat functions perfectly and this is Google breaking their covenant with us.
Let’s not replace with Nest, but use other ecosystems. Please respond to this post with your suggestions for other great brands and options. This community can provide recommendations of better device for us to use and help us leave the Google ecosystems.

This is the first I'm hearing of this. Can you explain more? I bought a Nest thermostat through my electric company. I haven't even set it up yet. It's an older generation I'm sure. Does this mean it won't work in the Home app when I finally get it installed?

@shaydee5 Yes, Remote control ability will end 25/10/2025. You will still be able to use the thermostat locally. See this announcement for details.

Wow! They were literally giving away that thermostat! No wonder! So what good is it now? The whole point of getting it was to have the ability to control it from anywhere; set the temperature to what you want so you don't walk into a cold house. WTH???

I know! Try searching Google nest replacements. That's all we can do if we want remote control back. The Tado coupon offer is an option but there are many posts here about problems redeeming that.

It’s only the gen 1 and gen 2 from 2011 and 2012. I doubt that’s the version you just got your hands on.

Yes 1st and 2nd generation devices are no longer supported after 25/10/2025 it will still work but will no longer receive firmware or security updates or be supported

I completely understand the frustration—having your paid-for device lose support unexpectedly is really disappointing. This kind of planned obsolescence not only wastes money but also contributes to electronic waste, which is a huge environmental concern.
On the bright side, 3D printing and maker communities are increasingly offering ways to repair, upgrade, or customize tech gadgets to extend their lifespan. If you’re curious about sustainable tech and DIY solutions that help reduce waste, there are some great resources available here

### What’s Happening?
- Google is ending support for older Nest devices (like the 1st gen thermostat) in the Nest app, meaning you’ll lose remote access and control features.
- This is part of Google’s effort to push users toward their newer products and the Google Home app, but it leaves older devices without full functionality.
### What Can You Do?
1. **Switch to the Google Home App**:
Some older Nest devices might still work in the Google Home app, though with limited features. Check if your thermostat is compatible.
2. **Consider Alternative Brands**:
If you’re looking to replace your thermostat, other reliable options include:
- **Ecobee**: Great features, works with multiple platforms.
- **Honeywell Home**: Offers strong compatibility and support.
- **Sensi**: Budget-friendly and easy to use.
3. **Voice Your Concerns**:
Share your experience on social media (like Twitter or Instagram Stories) and tag @Google and @NestSupport. Public pressure can sometimes lead to better solutions or compromises.
4. **Recycle Responsibly**:
If you do decide to replace your thermostat, check if Google or local programs offer recycling options for old devices.
It’s understandable to feel frustrated—this change affects many users who trusted the Nest ecosystem. Hopefully, Google will reconsider or offer better solutions for legacy devices. 😔

Really poor to discontinue app support of so many Nest thermostats. At least hand over APIs to the Open Source community, so that users have options beyond a dumb thermostat. Making a functioning piece of hardware dumb because you no longer wish to support it will rightly be perceived as dumb. Boo Google!
