Entry Key from Nest Thermostat

LarryLL
Community Member

I have seen many threads on this subject, none with a definitive solution, so I"m trying again. I have an older Nest Learning thermostat (I don't know specifically which model, it's 7-8 years old though). the thermostat has been working fine but the app (Android version) lost connectivity to the app about as week ago. It started by indicating that the device was offline. I could see from my Eero router that it was in fact online. I ended up deleting the app hoping to reconnect that way but now, I get a point where the app calls for an Entry Key from the device itself (there is no QR code to scan) and this is where It is failing to connect. I am getting the "There was a problem connecting to the service. Try again later" response. I have "tried again later" a dozen or so times. I have done a full factory reset on the device twice, simple restart 2 or 3 additional times. I have restarted my router multiple times. I have set the router to use only 2.4ghz. I have deleted my account from the Nest app and created a new one using a different email address. I have tried connecting via the Google Home app.

Each and every time I have tried something different, I get the connecting to service message. No entry key has ever been provided. Again, my device is connected to my home wifi network.

The unit worked without any real problem for many years, on the current Eero network for a year or so. Has anyone successfully solved this issue beyond just waiting a few weeks and it magically started working again?

Nest Learning Thermostat is managed using the Nest app, so don't try using the Home app, it won't help in your case. You mentioned trying a few steps, however I'll include the steps in full below in the order that usually resolve this issue.

Before trying setup again:

  • Check you're using the latest version of the Nest app.
  • Turn off cellular data.
  • Turn off or disconnect from any proxy, VPN, or antivirus type apps or settings on your phone.

Setup:

  1. Factory reset the thermostat.
  2. On the Nest app home screen, tap the Settings cog.
  3. Tap Add product. The app will switch to a camera view to scan the thermostat’s QR code.
  4. On the thermostat, press it to open the quick view menu and tap the Settings cog.
  5. Turn the ring to select Nest app and press to open it.
  6. Select QR code. Your thermostat will show you a unique QR code to scan with the app. If it doesn't, tap Continue without scanning in the app and select Get entry key on your thermostat instead.
  7. Follow the remaining steps in the Nest app.

My problem is that the Nest connects to Nest.com to get a code and it comes up with NNN-AAAA 3 numbers and 4 alpha.  The app does not recognize it.

The same thing has happened to me.  I called the help line on the box and they hung up on me.  No more support for the Nest they said.  I loved this app!  I could use it when I traveled, it was great.  Now it’s useless.  So disappointing.  Why not create a new app for help with the Nest thermostat?  Google just dropped the ball.

Feels like they're just trying to direct me to an upgrade for a product that for 7/8 years has worked fine.....🙄

I'm having a similar problem and have had no luck trying all of the suggestions on many of the responses in other threads on this subject.  No luck.

Hello folks,

I wanted to stop by and see how I could help.

I appreciate all the steps you've taken to try to add your Nest Thermostats to the Nest app. Let's sort this out.

Going over these steps might help:

  1. On your actual thermostat. Go to Settings > Reset > Account Connection > Reset to confirm.
    1. This will remove your thermostat from the existing account and Wi-Fi connection.
  2. Once done, reconnect it manually from the network settings.
  3. Go back to Settings > Nest App.
  4. Proceed by adding it again in the Nest app.

Please let us know if that works.

Thanks for the assistance here. Jenelyn and Archie

Regards,

Mark

I have the same problem. I can connect to my network but can't connect to the nest app. i scanned the qr code (on the back of the tstat nest e. It keeps being unable to provide an entry key.

i've restarted it. I really don't want to reset my tstat and lose my schedules, passwords, etc.

Are there no other options?

How do i check for adequate electricity. It seems to be enough but when i first installed it, it took a couple of days to charge up.
