Fan Schedule: Part of an hour????

WalkGood
Community Member

Set a fan schedule from 1200am to 1200am (basically for all day 24/7),  and select 30 minutes each hour.  If the ac does not need to run ,  how is that 30 minutes of fan time performed?  Will it run for 30 minutes straight and then not run for 30 minutes?  Or will the fan run on and off evenly spaced out during the hour?  Like 5 minutes on then 5 minutes off ,  over and over six times per hour?

Hello WalkGood,

Thanks for reaching out here in the Community. Forced-air systems run the fan whenever they're heating or cooling. If your forced air system has a separate fan wire in your Nest thermostat's G connector, you can run the system fan when it's not heating or cooling. If not, your fan will only run automatically when your system is heating or cooling. You're correct, when you set it for 30 minutes it'll run straight for 30 minutes in each hour and wait for the next hour to run again for 30 minutes. Hit this link for more information and let us know how it goes.

Emerson

Hey WalkGood,

Just one final check in here since activity has slowed down. We'll be locking the thread in the next 24 hours, but if you still need help, we would be happy to keep it open. If there's more we can do, just let us know.

Best,

Emerson

I only saw your replies just now,  in my spam folder since the email address is a strange domain.  It came from Google Nest Community Mailer "mailer at us.khoros-mail.com".

Gmail flagged it as spam.

I will read the link you provided at a later time this week.

Thanks

Hello folks,

Thanks for looking into this, Emerson.

@WalkGood, I don't want to be a nudge, but I'd like to check if you were able to get the answer you're looking for. Feel free to reach out again if you still need help.

Regards,

Mark

The answer wasn't exactly what I was hoping to hear.

I would prefer that the amount of fan time "on" would be spread out evenly during each hour.  For example if 30 minutes per hour is selected,  I would rather that the 30 minutes "ON" time would occur,  say,  "on" for 10 minutes then "off" for 10 minutes, on for 10 then off for 10,  then on for 10 & off for 10.  That would promote better air flow and evenness of temp and humidity through out the rooms.  And that is if the air conditioning (or heat) does not need to run during that time.   Having the fan run for 30 minutes straight and then off for 30 minutes  does NOT promote even temperatures within the home.   Some rooms with more windows and Sun exposure will get hotter than the area with the thermostat (usually well within the middle of the home).  Also cause big swings in temperatures throughout the home.  That would mean the occupant in that warmer zone would have to lower the temp setting to cause the ac compressor to run more making the whole house colder than needed.

For a SMART thermostat,  Nest needs to be smarter in this area.  That's the point of paying so much money for it,  to save heating/cooling energy costs and to have better occupant comfort levels.

I welcome the opportunity to submit my concerns to development engineers,  if you can tell me how I can to do so myself directly to them.
