I recently received notice that my 2nd Gen 2012 Nest thermostat will lose remote functionality unless I upgrade to a new model. While I appreciate that Google offered a $90 discount, the new model Gen 4 still costs $219, meaning I’m being asked to pay $200+ out of pocket just to maintain the basic features I already had.
That’s not a “deal” — that’s a forced purchase.
My existing thermostat works perfectly. I don’t need new features — just essential functionality like remote control, which was a core part of Nest's value proposition. And now that’s being taken away not because the device is broken, but because Google is choosing to end support.
I’m also really concerned about the environmental impact of this decision. Disabling support for a fully functional product means thousands (maybe millions) of perfectly usable devices could end up as e-waste — and Google hasn’t offered a recycling or trade-in program to handle this responsibly.
This kind of move:
Disrespects users who trusted the Nest ecosystem early on
Adds unnecessary financial burden
Contributes to environmental harm
Puts all the costs on the consumer while the company benefits
I understand companies need to evolve and manage costs, but there has to be a more ethical, sustainable way to handle product transitions — like longer support windows, compatibility modes, or real trade-in options.
Is there any plan to address this more responsibly? Can't image Gen 2 will not be supported when Gen 4 is out. I still use my iPhone 5 today
And for users like me — can Google offer a more fair and eco-conscious solution beyond a partial discount?
Thanks for reading — I’m genuinely hoping we can have a thoughtful discussion on this.

"Appreciate the feedback": translation, we don't actually care at all, go to the form and spend the $200 you don't need to spend and we will help you trash your perfectly fine thermostat.
Ending support is one thing, extortion to buy a replacement is another.
One thing is certain, I will never buy another google product.

I could not agree more! This is a forced "upgrade". It is corrupt and horrible. I cannot even reach a human being anywhere to find out if I do pay for this unnecessary upgrade, will they send someone to install the new one? I do not know how to do it. I had to pay someone last time. The least they can do is install if forced to purchase. I am disgusted and miserable that I switched from honeywell to Nest - only to get screwed a few years later.
