Google Home App Crashes When Trying to Setup Nest Thermostat

WV

Hello

Wondering if anyone could help with my issue. I had purchased a Nest Thermostat sometime ago. Upon installation it prompted me to continue the setup through the Google Home App, however, after I get to the point in the app to discover the device, I select the serial number, and then it resets back to the home screen of the Google Home App. It doesn't proceed to the next step of setup. What am I doing wrong? Or is there a bug in the Google Home app that needs to be fixed?

I am having the same exact problem. Did you figure anything out. I am going to delete the app and reinstall first.

I have not, unfortunately. I have tried many times to delete the app and install again. But no luck. I'll reply back if I figure something out.

Hi folks,

Thanks for reaching out. I'm sorry to hear that you're having issues with setting up your Google Nest Thermostat. I'd love to know more about this and I have a few questions:

  • What is the OS version of your phone?
  • What is the version of the Google Home app?

Please let us know the results after uninstalling and reinstalling the app.

Thanks,

Edward

Hi Edward

I'm on an Android phone (Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5G), version 12.

The Google Home app is version 2.53.1.5

Please advise on any troubleshooting tips. I will try what you advise and report back. Thank you.

Hi WV,

Thanks for the response and the additional information. TO isolate the issue, could you try doing the following steps:

  • Clear the Google Home app cache and data
  • Uninstall the Google Home app
  • Reboot your phone
  • Install Home app

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks,

Edward

I tried that but it didn't work. But I'll share what did work, which was doing the setup on an Apple product. I used an Apple iPhone and the setup worked without any glitches. Seems like Android has a very hard time connecting with the Nest Thermostat. So once I did the set up in Apple, I just went onto my Android phone and logged in to the Google Home app and both my Thermostats were there and connected.

One last question for you Edward - Do these Thermostats require rechargeable batteries, or just standard batteries?

Hi WV,

Thanks for sharing the steps that worked for you! Regarding the batteries, we recommend using only high-quality 1.5 V AAA alkaline batteries from a known manufacturer.

Thanks,

Edward

None of that worked for me. I had to set up the Nest Thermostat in the Nest app first and then use the serial number to connect it. It was weird but I definitely fix it that way.
