Google Nest Wi-Fi Smart Thermostat

Hi - I have five wires from my furnace (red, black, green, white, orange) and these were converted to a four wire connection with a Honeywell adapter to my Honeywell thermostat (i.e. only have four wires going to thermostat). I can't seem to get the A/C connected on my new Nest thermostat. Everything works fine except I can't get the thermostat to recognize the A/C (even if I connect the orange wire, which I believe connects to the A/C to the Y connector on the Nest - white wire from furnace is currently disconnected entirely in my five wire to four wire setup). Appreciate any insight on the wiring options I have to get this working (even if it means running a fifth wire from the thermostat!).

Thanks.

Hey Andy333,

Thank you so much for keeping me updated. I appreciate the information that you have provided me. To continue getting to the root of the issue, could you please help me by answering these questions?

  • What type of HVAC system do you have?
  • Could you attach a picture of the HVAC system's board?

For additional information, you can check out this tool: Compatibility Checker to determine if your Nest Thermostat is compatible.

I'll look forward to your response.

Best regards,

Daniel

Hi Andy333,

Thanks for providing those photos; they are really helpful! No worries, help is here! Let’s try some troubleshooting steps:

  1. Connect the Orange wire to O/B* spot
  2. Change the O/B wire orientation:
  • Open the Home app.
  • Tap your thermostat.
  • At the top right, tap Settings .
  • Select Thermostat.
  • Scroll until you find Heat pump. It should show which wire configuration is currently selected.
  • If the O option is highlighted, select B.
  • If the B option is highlighted, select O.
  • To make sure the issue is resolved, test your heating and cooling again.

Please try it and let me know how it goes.

Regards,

Axel.

Thanks Axel.  Not sure I'm clear on what you're suggesting. The only orange wire that exists is currently connected to the Honeywell converter module. Are you referring to the red wire that's currently connected to R on the Nest? Or are you suggesting that I run a fifth wire (Orange) to the Nest?

Hi Andy333,

Thanks for replying! I appreciate the clarification that there isn’t any orange wire that can be connected to the Nest Thermostat, only that it is connected to the converter module. Could you please try to connect the black wire to the O/B * port and change the wire orientation?

Keep me posted.

Regards,

Axel.
