Google Nest has no power (E298)

Hey there, I woke up from a nap a little ago and realized it was hot as hell in the house and i was sweating. Went to check my phone and it said the Nest was offline. Went and checked the thermostat and it said no power. It had the “!” sign on “Wiring”. Clicked that an all the “wires” are greyed out and not being detected. Turned the breaker off, took off nest, inspected wires, looks fine, everything plugged in, changed batteries, put nest back on, turned breaker back on, restarted system, nothing.

i don’t wanna pay someone to come out and do something i can do. Please help.

Hi Lbell333,

Thank you for reaching out to the community. I'm sorry to hear that your Nest thermostat is showing the error message "E298." Help's here!

Since you're encountering Error E298, I believe you have a Nest thermostat. Could you please confirm the model of your thermostat and share a photo of your wiring installation? Additionally, I'd like to ask the following:

  • What type of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system do you have?
  • Have you used your AC unit recently? Frequent AC use during hot weather can cause the drip pan to fill with water or the drain tubes to clog. This can lead to the AC or heat pump shutting off to prevent water overflow.
  • Do you have a common wired or Nest power connector installed in your HVAC system?
  • When did you install the thermostat?

In the meantime, you can try the following:

  • Replace the batteries to regain control of your system while troubleshooting.
  • You mentioned seeing a "!" sign on the "Wiring labels." You can try removing each wire one by one and cleaning them with a paper towel. Sometimes the thermostat base is unable to detect the wires if they have dust. After that, if the thermostat turns back on, perform a factory reset and set it up in the Google Home app. Important: Before touching any wires, turn off the power to your HVAC system at the breaker box. For reference, you can check out this article: Troubleshoot a "No power" alert on the Nest Thermostat (E298 or M20 help code).

Please keep me posted.

Best regards,

Jenniffer
