Im trying to install a Nest Learning Thermostat to control my house’s heat pump. The compatibility checker said incompatible, but all the instructional videos show the same connections as my Honeywell thermostat. I gave it a shot regardless, and it installed, linked to wifi, but the systems testa failed to activate components. I threw in the towel and put my honeywell back up. Before i return it, can anyone tell me if im missing anything?

Hello BrandonA,

I'm sorry for the experience you had with the installation. I'd be happy to take a look at your systems' compatibility with the Nest.

A few questions: did you take a photo of how you installed your thermostat? Could you please share with us a copy of it? Also, if your system has an emergency heat, could we give it another shot to ensure we got the right configuration? Please follow these wiring guides here:

  • Y/Y1 (yellow)
  • G (green)
  • C (blue)
  • O/B (orange)
  • W2/Aux (white)
  • *star (brown)
  • Rc (red)

Please ensure that all wires are properly connected and tabs are pushed down. After the setup, try activating both cooling and heating modes and keep me posted on how it goes.

Best regards,
Mark

Mark,

thank you so much for your replies. Unfortunately, i had to return the unit before a certain date. It still sits poorly with me that it didnt work, as my house is very inefficient when left to a standard thermostat.

is it possible for the compatibility checker to be wrong, and the appropriate installation will establish the correct functionality? I imagine the checker’s bar is set pretty low in reg to liability in the hands of someone like me, haha. If it is possible for the unit to function, i may try it again. The electric bill is pretty unhinged currently and i think some of the Nest’s intrinsic value would be repaid many times over
