Heat suddenly won’t turn off

JKJ246

We’ve had our Nest Learning Gen 3 thermostat installed for a week and it seemed fine and then suddenly I began to get notifications that the safety temp of 40F had been reached when it was actually approximately 65F. It turned on the heat (gas forced air) and would not turn off. The thermostat was showing it was 47F when it was 80F. The heat would not turn off via the thermostat even when set to off or restarted. Help.! Any suggestions??

Hi JKJ246,

Thanks for reaching out and we're sorry to hear about what happened.

In this situation, we could remove the Nest Thermostat from the base and check if your system is still heating. Once removed, check your heating if it is still activated.

Also, check your thermostat location. Is there any electronics / appliance near it? Make sure that wires at the base terminal on your Nest Thermostat are properly inserted.

Best regards,

Ryan

I tried setting it to off, restarting and resetting it and removing the Nest from base. Nothing worked - the heat remained on. It was set for 65 and the floor was heated up to 82 before we realized it was running non-stop, but Nest was saying that it was only 40 and had exceeded safety temperature. I received some 6 pairs of alerts that day while I was away from home saying safety temps were exceeded but then almost immediately received another alerts saying that my temps had returned to normal.
We double checked the wiring and it was fine.

I ultimately turned the power to furnace completely off at the breaker. Then when I restarted it, everything seemed fine with the Nest and I’ve had no more problems with it. But I definitely am leery of leaving it on vacation and want to figure out what was happening.  Any suggestions are welcome!

Hi JKJ246,

Thanks for your reply.

If you're going to be on a vacation, we suggest you set your Eco mode. When you manually set your Nest Learning Thermostat or Nest Thermostat E to Eco Temperatures, it will stay in that mode and won’t automatically switch back to heating or cooling until you manually switch it to one of those modes.

Also, make sure to connect your Nest Thermostat to your WiFi so you can remotely monitor it while you're away.

Best regards,

Ryan

No further incidents but the fact that we had difficulty turning it off still makes me concerned about leaving on an extended trip away. If we manually put it on Eco mode, will it be unable to turn on the heat until we manually change that? I’m still not sure why it was indicating that temps had dropped below safety levels since they were in reality some 40• higher.

Hi JKJ246,

Thanks for the update.

Could you try to turn off the Eco settings and observe the behavior for the next couple of days? Also, check the temperature schedule and look for the unwanted entry to it.

I hope it helps.

Best regards,

Ryan
