Despite several recommendations on fixes, my bolier and heating just come on randomly during the day and night. I have switched off the auto schedule but it’s still doing it. Can anyone help please

Do the circulator pumps come on and heat the house when this happens, or are you saying you hear the boiler run sometimes without the circulator pumps running (just the boiler)?

I ask because boiler may be wired to maintain heat in the boiler regardless of the thermostat calling for heat. If that is how your system is designed then it is normal to hear it fire up to keep the boiler hot and ready if there is a call from thermostat.

Also some boilers have a water heater tank aka indirect water heater, that uses your boiler to heat your domestic hot water tank. Those systems will run the boiler to keep the hot water tank heated.

Thanks for the reply, we do have a separate water tank. However the radiators in the house come on as well even in the summer at random times

Is the water tank heated from the boiler, or it is a totally separate water heater with its own gas connection?

If the pumps are coming on even in the summer heating the house then you need to take some pics of the wires coming from the thermostat at the boiler showing where they connect so we can determine if it is wired correctly.

Do the thermostat wires go to a control box near the boiler?

Also post pic of the wires on the Nest.

Do you have a AC system connected to the Nest or is this thermostat only controlling the boiler and nothing else?

Thanks the hot water is heated by the boiler. I will have to ask the company who installed the system to come around and answer the other questions as I don’t really have a clue what I am looking at tbh

Usually boilers have a control box possibly a green color Taco brand name on it? That is where the brown thermostat wire usually goes to but you might have a different setup. Without seeing pictures of the boiler room we can't help.

Thanks for the info, we can’t seem to upload any photos to this discussion. Can you let me know where to send them to?

When you type in the box to reply there is a camera icon. Click that and it says insert photos.

I have the sam issue. Today I woke up and the main floor nest thermostat turned itself on to 74 Degrees. I have never sent it to 74 degrees - ever. In fact, we are heating the house with mini splits and plan on using the furnace for back up heat. If I can't get these random heat cycles to stop I will need to remove 3 nest thermostats and replace with the cheapest ones i Can find.

I have a system 200 boiler that also heats the hot water tank. I don't see how this relates to the thermostat occasionally turning on to a heating temp I have never used before.

What model Nest do you have the Learning that you rotate the ring or the regular Nest that has a mirror glass and you touch the edge to change the temp?

If its the regular non learning Nest you have to look at the 3 presets Eco Comfort and Sleep to see what you set them at one might be 74.

I have the version that you tote the outer ring to use.  Software version 6.2-27.

@JonnyPain

Thanks for reaching out. I'm sorry to hear about the issue with your thermostat. Can you tell me what country are you located in? Also are your thermostats purchased from the same country? Is the feature for Auto-Schedule enabled on the Settings?

I am in the United States and bought all 3 at the same time here in the US.

they have worked great for a couple of years, they just started acting up this year.  No change in settings and I have turned off the auto learn.  I have also turned off the “leaf”, and they keep trying to turn back on to leaf setting.

with the settings described above, I then turn the temps down to 50 degrees.   From this setting they randomly turn on to various heat settings.

last time I filled my oil tank the price was over $5.00 a gallon - so this has a cost to it when they turn on.

Hi folks,

@JonnyPain, give these steps a try:

  1. Check your air filter, as a clogged filter may cause a similar symptom.
  2. If the air filter is dirty and needs to be changed, I recommend replacing the air filter and let us know if the issue continues after you change the filter.

Keep us posted.

Best,
Mel

My furnace does not have a filter.  It’s an oil burning hot water baseboard heat.
