Having spent 10 days online to Google support I am still no closer to having Home/Away Assist working. Does ANYONE know how to fix this or is it time to look into a different product altogether?

There is no fix for this yet, unfortunately you are experiencing what growing number of us finding and that Google are ignoring us.
There is an extensive thread about this that was locked by one of the so called "Community Specialists" due to lack of "activity" despite there being plenty of activity, and was very busy over the last 2 weeks. It is a little convoluted the thread and doesn't necessarily flow in a linear timeline, perhaps that's why it was locked.
That said there is lots of info about a workaround using just the Nest App and binning Google Home and replacing it with Samsung Smart Things. It is this reason that the thread should have stayed open, for 2 reasons, 1) tto continue offering help configuring Samsung Smart THings (SST) and 2) Shouldn't be closed until Google fix the d a m n thing.

Thank you unfortunately SST doesn't seem to work on my iOS - it won't recognise the Nest app in devices.

Can't see anyone contacting @SiobhanT about something that's not of Google's making. Unless of course you're talking about the whole issue with Nest and not going into Eco mode upon leaving home etc. If that's what you're talking about then people may update you accordingly. Recent communications seen to indicate some improvement but i think a lot of us are still using Samsung Smart Things in combination with Nest app . Please clarify to whom and what you are referring to

Luckily its now Summer so I don't need my heating on.....Gave up waiting for Google ages ago. They're useless.
