I have had my Nest Thermostat for almost a year and I can’t work this out… all articles suggest that Home Away Assist can be activated using the Activity Sensors on the device but I cannot get this to work.
To be clear I do not want to use the location of my phone. I want to use the device only. I have, of course, adjusted the settings in the Nest App. Under “What Decides…” phone off, device on. But it does not have the desired result.
Is this possible? Or am I trying to do something impossible?

Hello RichardV87,
Thanks for reaching out. I understand your frustration with the Nest Thermostat and Home Away Assist. It can indeed be a bit tricky to get the settings just right. If you're adamant about not using the location of your phone and want to rely solely on the device's activity sensors, there are a few things you can check and adjust.
On the Nest app, under "What Decides..." settings, you've correctly chosen "phone off, device on." However, also check the sensitivity settings for the Activity Sensors. Sometimes, adjusting the sensitivity can make a significant difference. Also, tuning off the settings on the thermostat device itself will do.
Here's an article to change Home/Away Assist settings, and let us know if you have more questions.
Regards,
Mark
