How many thermostats to buy?

torijensen
Community Member

I want to buy this thermostat for my home.  I currently have two very very old thermostats.  Do I need two Nest thermostats or just one?  I am confused because of the room sensor that you can put in other rooms.

Thanks,

Tori Jensen

torijensen,

If the two thermostats are located in different areas in your home, you likely have two separate HVAC systems.  Depending on where you live, some homes start with heating systems and later add a Air Conditioning system.  This is one situation that would explain a separate heating system form the AC system. This would require two separate Nest Learning Thermostats. One be for the heating system and the other for the AC cooling system.

Some newer homes have two separate Heat Pump split systems and is usually seen in multilevel homes of two living floors and a basement.  This situation would need two separate Nest Learning Thermostats.

Perhaps you can provide more information about your homes heating and cooling system.

We have two air conditioners and two furnaces.  I figure we need two Nest Thermostats.  Thanks.

Torijensen, yes indeed you will require two Nest Learning Thermostats 3rd Generation.  In preparation for that purchase and installation, you might want to take a picture of your current thermostat and its backplate where the wires are connected.   In order to add a picture to a post in this community, you must upload the picture before you type the text response or you’ll get an error.

On another thought, if you get a Nest Pro to install the thermostats, you will add 3 years to standard 2 year warranty for a full 5 year warranty.

Ok, we will try to figure out how to photograph the back plate and post the photos. How do we hire a Nest pro?

thank you

I don’t know how to attach a photo here.  It looks like wires just go through a hole in the circuit board into the wall.  We couldn’t take it off the wall.  We could only take the cover off. We are not very handy.

OK, congratulations you were able to upload a photo. Now your system has gas heat and it has a red wire going to the RH, a blue wire going to Y, A green wire going to G, and a white wire going to W.  It appears you do not have any available conductors for a COMMON wire.  When you buy your thermostat I would encourage you to buy a nest learning thermostat 3rd generation.

How do I find the right person to install these thermostats?

You will have to search on the Internet for Google nest pro. There are HVAC companies in your area that are probably like me, nest pro certified, and then there are national companies that hire people in their general areas to do the same. Truth be told if you have a Phillips screwdriver, you could do this yourself.

we have the thermostats now. They were delivered yesterday.  Not sure if we can put them in as we aren’t sure how to disconnect the old ones snd take them off the wall.  If we do put them in, is it easy to program them to Alexa and my iphone?  Thank you!
