How to switch heat/cool modes on a locked nest thermostat?

Documentation says, while the thermostat is locked:

"Anyone can turn the thermostat’s ring to change the temperature within the range you’ve set"

But from my experience, it seems like it's not possible to switch between heat and cool modes without entering the unlock PIN?

For example, range is set to 70-75.  It's cold in the morning and the occupants have the heat on in the house set to 72.  Occupants leave for the day, come home in the evening, and now it's 80 degrees in the house.  Occupants can't switch the mode to cool without entering the unlock PIN?

If the unlock PIN must be entered in this circumstance, the lock functionality is pretty much useless, so I'm very much hoping this is not the case.

unfortunately this is how it is. i came here to request the ability to add a high point and low point and be able to allow the user to set the temp between those points while also being able to switch between heat and cool modes.
