My thermostat is reading inside temp nearly 10 degrees too high. It is more like 68 or 69. My heat will not turn on plus I cannot set a leaf temp because it is at 80 degrees. Today is nice out thankfully but it will be cold tonight. What is wrong and how to fix this?

Started about 10 days ago. It is my downstairs thermostat. I generally set my temps around 72. I had an hvac guy to come by today. He used a temp gauge and read 100 degrees on the faceplate and warmer on the inside but about a 6 inch circle around it the temp was normal. He put a basic digital thermostat on it and the temps were normal. So for some read the red wire seems warmer weird huh? Checked the cb's and they were fine. Long story short its under warranty so Best buy is bring me another one.
