Can the new Gen-4 Thermostat be installed without any wiring? E.g. just consume power via usb or power adapter plugged to the wall?

No.... You still need to wire it so it can control your HVAC system.

Where are you located? US/Canada or UK/Europe? The 4th Gen is not compatible in the UK/Europe area.
No, it must be connected to at least two terminals with R, Rh, or Rc being one of them and W or Y being the other one.

I am based in the UK. Thanks for your reply @Patrick_Caezza, I think that settles it.

I understand that there should be a receiver unit connected to the boiler to control the boiler. But I was referring to the thermostat itself, does that need connecting to any wires, other than power supply?

Depends on your setup, if you had a wireless controller or a wired one. Here is the installation guide which should help! https://nest.com/support/images/misc-assets/Nest-Thermostat-Installation-Guide-UK.pdf

This link refers to the Gen-3 thermostat. Would it apply to Gen-4 also? Is there anyone I can speak to because these responses are not helpful at all.
