we currently have a Honeywell. Will a nest learning thermostat be compatible with this?

Looks like a Heat only system correct?
You probably only have 2 wires connected behind the base, you need a tiny screwdriver to loosen the front plate to remove the plate with the lever and mercury bulb from the rear plate to see the thermostat wires connected.
The Nest (non learning model) needs a C wire to keep it powered up so you would need a extra 3rd wire and also connect it to the C common at the heating system.
The Nest Learning model does not need a C wire in most cases.
What kind of heating system do you have? Gas hot air furnace or a hot water boiler system?

Looks like Natural Gas forced air furnace.
You need to see how many wires are behind the thermostat plate, There are tiny screws and the front plate comes off and another back plate stays screwed to the wall. See how many wires are ins the cable coming out of the wall into the old thermostat.
