@fswalsh , your HVAC system is a Heat Pump with Auxiliary heat. You will need to acquire a Nest Learning Thermostat 3rd Generation. Form your photo I cannot see the labels for the Blue wire and the Red wire. Can you confirm the red wire is on R and the blue wire is on C?

Hi Sabrinahoston30,
I'd like to take a closer look at it. Could you please take a photo of the wires that are connected to your HVAC control board? Ensure that the labels are visible. Also, make and model your HVAC system.
I appreciate the help, @CoolingWizard and Alex.
Best,
Jenelyn

Where do I find the make and model of HVAC system?

The manufacturer label on the outdoor unit will be located on the electoral side panel that the wires go into. The air handler is a bit tougher, sometimes is on the outside of the cabinet side panel, sometimes it is on the inside of the side panel and you would have to open the front panel to see it.

Take the two screws in bottom two corners out and realist red from off the back. The wires form the HVAC equipment are on the back side.

Your current thermostat appears to be wired as you having a Heat Pump HVAC system with auxiliary heat. Your wires form your HVAC equipment are Red attached to R, Yellow attached to Y, Green attached to G, White attached to W2, Blue attached to X, and Orange attached to O. Here are the functions of each terminal of the thermostat.
R is the 24VAC power coming from your HVAC equipment to the thermostat.
Y is connected to the Compressor relay we call a contactor.
G is connected to the Blower Fan relay.
W is output to the Integrated Furnace Controller., or in your case Auxiliary Heat Strips
O is the Heat Pump mode reversing valve.
X is the Emergency Heat; manually activated.
You will need to purchase a Nest Learning Thermostat in order to support a heat Pump with Auxiliary and Emergency heat.
