Latest Nest Thermostat with Matter Protocol support

As per the information available in few of the google blogs, the latest Nest Thermostat is planned to support Matter protocol. I would like to understand a bit more with respect to its wireless connectivity. Does these latest Matter based Nest Thermostat supports the following;

i) Supports only WiFi and gets directly commissioned to Home WiFi network ? (or)

ii) Supports only Thread and gets connected to the Home network through a Border Router ?
