Message: “Your system is running a lot. The temperature sensor might need to be moved.”

Tim_Walker
Community Member

I recently installed the Nest Thermostat with remote sensor.
My system is working fine, except I get this annoying message twice, almost every time the furnace turns on:
“Your system is running a lot. The temperature sensor might need to be moved.”
How do I get rid to the message?

I have a Nest Learning Thermostat in the Kitchen. I have a remote sensor in the Bedroom.
The remote sensor is set for 62 degrees.
I have the Bedroom temperature Sensor selected. It is working, because the temp stays at 62 in Bedroom, while I use my heat pump to heat the rest of the house.

Questions:
1. What condition is causing the message?

2. How can I stop the message from going to my iPhone?

Hi Tim_Walker,

Thanks for posting here in the community and bringing this issue to our attention. To confirm, are you getting this message right after you turn on your furnace or will you receive it randomly? This type of message is more like a notification rather than an error. It's like it's saying that you might want to turn off your Nest temperature sensor or give it a rest to avoid being worn out.

Regards,
Emerson

Every time I get the message, the furnace has just turned on. So it is not random. However I don't get the message every time the furnace turns on, just some of the time.

Since the purpose of the Sensor is to monitor a remote bedroom, turning off the Nest Sensor is NOT an option.

My question is: "How do I shut off the Notification?"

Thanks,

Tim

Hello Tim_Walker,

Thanks for getting back to us. To confirm, when did you start receiving the message? When did you install your Nest Protect?

Try these steps:

  • Remove your Nest Temperature sensor from your app.
  • To perform a full reset, remove the battery from the sensor for 5 minutes and then put it back.
  • Change its placement.
  • Reconnect it through the Nest App.

Keep me posted.

Best,
Emerson

Emerson.

I've had the messages since I installed it 2 months ago.

I've removed the battery and reconnected and still get the messages.

I've reset the thermostat several times, and still get the messages.

Everything functionally works fine, except for the annoying notifications.

How do I turn off those notifications?

Thanks,

Tim

SOLVED (Sort of)

Since Google had no solution, I ended up turning off Notifications for the Nest App, on my iPhone.

Came here bc I get the same notifications daily and it freaks me out, but I look at the usage and it's only running 2 - 2.5 hours in 24 hours. I hope Google pushes out an update to resolve this. Notifications like these should be accurate, otherwise consumers could ignore a real dangerous situation.

Ditto. I get these notifications over and over and over, ridiculous. Is the system running more frequently than usual? Yes, but that’s what happens when you have an extreme cold front come through dropping the temperature 40 degrees below normal with an insane wind chill factor.

So, HOW DO YOU TURN OFF THESE SPECIFIC NOTIFICATIONS??

On my iPhone Xs, I go to Settings -> Notifications -> Nest -> Allow Notifications == OFF

That shuts off all Notifications from Nest.

What is interesting is that I also have the Google Home App with Notifications = ON, and I don't get any Notifications. They only came from the Nest App.

Hello folks,

I'm sorry for the trouble this may have caused everyone. I understand that turning off the Nest app notification from your phone's settings will completely turn off all the alerts, such as HVAC monitoring, if you have any other Nest devices. In line with this, please let our product team know about it by sending feedback about the notification settings. and please let us know if you have any further questions or concerns before we close this thread in 24 hours.

Thanks for assisting, Emerson.

Mark

Hello Tim,

I'm sorry for the trouble this may have caused you — let's see what's going on.

Your Temperature Sensor appears to have detected a sudden temperature change. To isolate, did you create a schedule for the sensor? Also, please try moving your sensor to a different part of the room and observing its behavior. Keep us updated on how it goes after it recalibrates the room temperature.

Best regards,

Mark

I’m having the same issue with a recently installed temperature sensor. It doesn’t seem like the heat runs for an inordinate amount of time to get the room up to temperature. Is this something the thermostat will eventually “learn” and stop sending alerts?

Hi everyone,

We’ve duplicated your thread to the main one here. You’ll receive all updates on this issue on the main thread and we recommend updating and checking this thread when needed.

Thanks,

Mark

The "Schedule" is that its supposed to be 62F all the time. The room is only 10'x10' with 7' ceiling and forced hot water radiators. The temperature sensor is next to an inside wall with no radiator. It is as far from the radiator as I can get it.

I did change the "system" setting from Oil-heat/Radiator to Electric Radiator, and while I still get the messages, the frequency seems to have dropped a little.

Thanks,

Tim
