Hi - we just moved into a home with two Nest thermostats (unsure what kind; Learning?) and both thermostats seemed inoperative. Blank screens, no blinking lights, etc. I was told by the previous owner to pull them off the wall to reset them, which did not work. Not sure what to do now, any help is appreciated. I dowloaded the app and scanned the QR code to set it up and nothing happens. Thanks.

I think the previous owner has to remove the thermostats from their account. This is Google Nest Help's page on this topic: https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/11151047?hl=en

If no power to the nest then I would check the power to the HVAC system. If the breaker/switch is off then power won't be supplied the nest. Or if they have there own power feed from a transformer check that.

We have an oil furnace, not an HVAC system, so not sure how that applies. The thermostats in this house control heat only. Could you please clarify? (Having said that, all our breakers are on.) Thank you!

When the battery dies because they haven’t been used in a while and the previous owner might have shut the furnace off for a prolonged period of time, the thermostats will lose charge. They only hold a little bit of energy in them. You can pull the face off and plug them into a mini USB in the back for an hour or so and then put it back on the wall and reprogram it. This should work. Good luck!!

Hi Janicezazinski,
Thanks for sharing your thoughts here in the Google Nest Community.
I'd like to jump in here and check if you've seen our friends here in the forum. Big thanks to MplsCustomer, FDRTech and R6pilot's responses. It is a good idea to recharge the Nest Thermostat using a USB and then do a complete data reset. Once done, you could start the setup process and link it to your own account.
Let us know how it goes by replying to this thread.
Regards,
Ryan

What finally worked to get the Nests to work as they’re supposed to was getting real WiFi and having the nests be able to connect to them. We had had to use hotspots for a couple of weeks while we waited for our Starlink to arrive.
To get them turned on at all, he previous owner had to disconnect them from his account (the realtor helped us arrange that) and he also told us to flip on the switch to power the oil burner. That turned the Nests on.
