All instructions I have read involve getting access to the original account which I have no access to.  Can I physically reset the device and start all over? It is a first generation device with no device code and no QR code

Sorry to hear about your account issues! I can totally understand the frustration behind being locked out of your account. I'm happy to help you out here.

Here's how to restart or factory reset your device. A factory reset should wipe all personal data from your device, which would allow for a fresh install.
