Nest (3rd Gen) Power Fault & Disconnecting WiFi network

CozCorris
Community Member

I've had a Nest 3rd gen for 7 years without any issues.

The thermostat now says the device does not have enough power. When it does turn on, the thermostat disconnects from the WiFi network.

It's constantly restarting due to a lack of power and only stays connected to the Internet for aprox one hour.

Research online suggests a fault base plate.

I'm torn between replacing with a Tado system rather than buying a new base plate. Others have suggested the fault often reoccurs in the future.

Any advice welcome.

Hi CozCorris,

Thanks for posting. I'm sorry to hear about the situation that you are experiencing with your Nest Learning Thermostat 3rd Gen, which is losing Wi-Fi connection and having power issues. I understand how difficult this can be, but I appreciate all the information provided and your efforts while searching for a solution. But don't worry; help is here. I just need to ask for some information to provide the best solution.

  • Are you getting any error codes on the Nest app or on the device itself?
  • What is the status of the LED light on the Nest Learning Thermostat?
  • When did the issue first occur?
  • Is the thermostat's display seated properly on the base plate?
  • Are all the wires of your thermostat seated firmly in its terminals (with no loose or exposed wires)?
  • Have you tried any steps to solve the situation?

Please keep me posted.

Best regards,

Jenny

Hi Jenny

I've had the thermostat for approximately 7yrs with no issues.

From my research on reddit, a few people with same issue have diagnosed the base plate as being faulty.

  • No error codes showing
  • The device keeps shutting down. It currently won't turn back on. I've had it on charge externally with a micro USB wire but this has made no difference.
  • This first started happening approximately two weeks ago.
  • Both wires (UK) are firmly in the slots and the base plate is correctly in place.
  • I've updated the software, performed several restarts, Re-connected the wifi and checked the wires are secure

Power display in the settings -

Hi CozCorris,

Thanks for your response and the information provided, including the detail about the power display in the settings. I need to continue isolating the issue. Based on the information you've just provided, could you please now answer the following questions?

  • Where are you located?

  • Do you have more than one thermostat?

  • Has there been a power outage or any recent work done on your thermostat(s) or heating system?

Please keep me posted.

Regards,

Jenny

  • The nest is in the hall way
  • We only have one thermostat
  • Over the last 6 months, there could have been a power outage in our neighbourhood. Nothing recent that I can recall. I've only noticed thr issues two weeks ago due to the drop in temp and wanting to put the heating on.
