Like many posts seen here, my nest thermostat worked normally for many months, and then all of a sudden I noticed it lost its wifi connection, a week later it basically broke saying it was always on low power and cannot charge or function. I take it off the base and charged it for hours, and after putting it back on it immediately says again the battery is low and cannot function. This is frustrating and a huge liability as if we were not home when it broke and the house went below freezing we would have severe issues.
It worked fine for many months now, after taking it off base, I used volt meter to see that there was power to C, so it's not that, it has always had power to C wire.
I'm also concerned because power companies often give out rebates for these newer devices because they enable some better efficiency and programs they monitor. However given that these products are unreliable, I am concerned about utility companies and governments offering rebates for them.

Hi tyrone1,
Thanks for bringing this up here in the Google Nest community. We're sorry for any trouble this may have caused you. Let’s isolate and check the case. There are only two reasons for the Nest Thermostat to drain its battery: one is power, which you already checked, and the second is network. If the Nest Thermostat is having a hard time connecting to your network, it will drain your battery. Disconnect the Nest Thermostat from your network after charging it up to 3.7 volts, and monitor the case.
Also, if I may ask, what type of Nest Thermostat do you have?
I look forward to your response.
Best,
Renz

I am having the same issue. It is freezing in my house but it could be much worse. I am highly concerned and I am done, I just want my money back.

I ended up directly contacting support and they sent me a replacement unit. What is still not great is that yeah it died out of nowhere, and in winter that's dangerous if your pipes might freeze unexpectedly

Hi folks,
@RVAGirl, thanks for bringing this to our attention. I'm sorry for the trouble this might have caused you. I'd like to know more about it. A few questions: what type of Nest Thermostat do you have? In what country are you located? Were you already able to charge your thermostat for an hour? Do you see any blinking light on your thermostat display?
@tyrone1, I'm glad to hear that the replacement unit is already sent. I appreciate your thoughts and experience — we'll take it as feedback.
Regards,
Jenelyn

I have the Nest Learning 3rd generation and I am located in the US. I charged my thermostat overnight and it is still saying low battery.

Hi there RVAGirl,
Thanks for keeping me in the loop. Do you have access to your thermostat's Technical Info? If yes, please gather your thermostat's power readings and share it with us. Also, take a look at the 20 pins at the back of your thermostat's display. Ensure that there's no missing pin and they have the same sizes and shapes.
Kind regards,
Jenelyn
