Nest 3rd generation / oil furnace / generator inverter

Hello, I have the Nest 3rd generation.

This controls my dual-energy system (bi-energie in french), which includes my heat pump which produces heat and air conditioning, then between 3 deg C and -12 deg C, controls the heating elements in my ventilation duct, and if the temperature is lower than -13 deg C, check my oil furnace.

I will power my system in the event of a power outage with an inverter generator that will be dedicated to my oil furnace only.

How can I ask Nest to only run my oil furnace since the other components will not be powered?

Hi commequidira,

Thanks for posting in the Community! I can definitely help you to change on your Nest Learning Thermostat the heating source. Let’s try the next steps:

  1. Press the thermostat ring to bring up the Quick View menu.
  2. Select Settings   Equipment. You’ll find all the wires currently connected to your thermostat.
  3. Continue.
  4. Choose Heat type, then select the type of heating you have.

Let me know how it works,

Regards,

Axel.

Hello, thanks for the info. I followed your instructions but it leads to further and with more choices, it offers me to do tests. It is not clearly indicated to choose a specific equipment to heat.

After your point 3, I get the YOUR SYSTEM section, which lists the equipment. I only have the choice to continue by clicking CONTINUE, I arrive at another page: EQUIPMENT SETTING, at this point I am offered - Heat type
-Heat pump
-Dual energy
- Inst PRO
-Precedent

Is it like just doing tests? I don't seem to have the possibility to choose the heating I want to use? It's annoying.

Hi commequidira,

Thanks for replying! Sorry to hear that the steps above didn’t let you choose which heating source you want to use. Let’s try some other steps:

  1. Remove the Nest Learning Thermostat from the Google Home App or Nest App.
  2. Perform a Factory Reset on your Thermostat.
  3. Setup again, during the setup process you’ll be able to select the heating source.

Let me know how it works.

Regards,

Axel.

Hello AxelD,

thank you for the information, I think I found a way to do it. From the Google Home app, I can tell it to switch to alternative heating without using the heat pump.

I will eventually test and of course, if there is a power outage, I will have to make sure to power the house wifi.

to test of course! THANKS !!
