My thermostat display is showing a System issue with website (g.co/nest/n416). The website is not valid and the error code n416 doesn't exist on the support page (https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9240096?hl=en#zippy=%2Cn-help-codes). When I look at the wiring menu on the thermostat, it says N416: Electrical issue on W1 wire.
This thermostat is connected to a gas boiler with 3 zones. The boiler is working and the house is heating including the zone that this thermostat is connected to.
Anyone have any thoughts on what the issue is?

Hey everyone,
We wanted to clarify that N help codes on your Nest Thermostat’s display are intended to be informational notes, whereas E help codes represent critical errors that should be fixed as soon as possible. Help codes N416 - N423, in particular, refer to your thermostat encountering an overvoltage or overcurrent event. You can review what other codes mean for your device in our Help Center article.
Your thermostat cannot induce or affect events that trigger a N help code. The thermostat hardware is monitoring the current and voltage levels on each circuit, and one of these help codes is surfaced if a threshold is crossed over a period of time. Resetting the thermostat will clear the event count and code, but the N help code will reappear if that event threshold is crossed again.
If you’re observing unusual behavior with your HVAC equipment, these notes can help an HVAC professional diagnose the issue. If your HVAC equipment is behaving as expected, you can ignore these notes, as intermittent overvoltage or overcurrent events are normal on some systems.
But we hear you. These notes can be confusing, and the team is currently exploring a software update to the 4th Gen Nest Thermostats to address the frequent visibility of these messages.
Thank you for the feedback.
Best regards,
Eduardo

Following this thread as I just installed my thermostat and it’s showing the same message. We need to figure out if perhaps this is just a technical glitch?
11-03-2025 04:20 AM
I restarted the thermostat and the error code has not come back.
11-03-2025 07:12 AM
so you did a hard reset just to confirm?
11-04-2025 03:51 AM
I did a soft restart.
To restart from the menu, press the display, go to Settings, select Reset, and then choose Restart.

Hi beyercj,
Thanks for reaching out to our community.
I understand that your Nest Learning Thermostat 4th gen was showing the error code N4156. While you couldn't find this code on the support page, you correctly identified from the wiring menu that it pointed to an electrical issue on the W1 wire. I appreciate you letting us know that restarting the thermostat resolved the issue.
Akacperski, I would appreciate it if you could confirm that the inconvenience remains resolved for you.
If you need further assistance, please feel free to contact us.
Best regards,
Virna

I just got this same error message. It’s been working fine for months and now isn’t heating. Nothing has changed, we did a soft restart, still no heat

I also recently got this message. It seems to correspond with the recent update.

The N416 message disappeared after I did a soft reset and I thought I was okay but then I ran a system test and the message is back.

A friend of mine had this very same error code with two of his. One he reset all the wires, the other he pulled and reset C and W wires. When I say reset, he turned the power off to the AC and Blower. Pulled the wires out, and reseated them, making sure he could not push them any further in. Doing this fixed his issue.
I pulled all my wires, blew out the holes for the connectors, reseated them and no longer get the error but it's only been about two days. We'll see.

This started happening to me a few days ago. Found this thread and doing a restart fixed the issue initially, but two days later it’s back. As noted in another comment, the thermostat still seems to be working and heating as scheduled. Not sure where to go next.

Getting invalid nest codes, originally N420 then N416 after a reset. Wiring hasn't changed and it was up and running for months already without issue. I have an older gen Nest device for the first floor of my home which is heating fine so I know the gas furnace is running. Anyone else having issues with this? I feel like it's a technical issue?

I woke up to the same issue this morning, N 420, only code. Unit has been working for months okay, last night was the first night to cycle completely through the heating cycle. Used heat pump during day, cold enough the alt heat turned on. There is nothing on the Google site except this one post. No wiring changes. I have dual fuel system, HP and propane as alt heat.

I’ve restarted the thermostat and it’s still showing an error message and not heating. We had an hvac tech come take a look and he said it’s an issue with the thermostat as the hvac works fine if bypassed. No heat and it’s snowing and we paid hundreds for this POS thermostat. Cool cool

This issue seems be a tech glitch that Google needs to address with an update.

Same issue for me. Code is N416. I restarted the thermostat and the error message went away. Two days later the error message is back. Despite the error code, the thermostat appears to be functioning correctly and heating the space based on the schedule

Same issue...worked fine, woke up in a freezing house, error code n416. Restarted but nothing. Are we able to uninstall this awful update?

I just installed the new Google Nest Thermostats v4 last weekend. Everything went great, until we added the heat to it this weekend. Seems to be an issue across the board. I am receiving this N416 and no heat coming through. I can put on the old Nest Thermostat v2 and I have heat again. What's up Google?
11-11-2025 08:09 AM
having the same issue. installed last week working fine then today N416 error. but only on one of the thermostats
11-11-2025 08:12 AM
I will also note, it's only one of the thermostat (upstairs). Downstairs working flawlessly and keeping us warm, for now.

Its going to be in the 20s again tonight.

Following up … N416 error finally fixed.
Had to replace the transformer & board in the furnace.
If I didn’t buy the nest from Home Depot on store credit …. and lost the receipt … I would return this thing in a heartbeat to prevent it from damaging the furnace again.

Yikes! You think it was definitely the Nest?

The furnace is only 3yrs old. My Gen1 nest was … 8?
they killed support for it, I put the latest on the wall and boom… issues.
Based off my experience alone, yes.
Based off other’s posts here, absolutely.

Just FYI I tried to put the old v2 back on - Same issue as you @irate4x4. Kicked on the heater to test with the old thermostat, heard a huge pop. I think it blew a fuse in the unit. I was able to troubleshoot and trace the fuse. Looks blown. I am currently headed to the hardware store to fix. I'm hoping to have heat in the next few hours. Yeesh. I don't think it was worth the discount and I'll be billing Google for my time (equivalent to the price of THREE thermostats!).

So what’s the fix, it’s cold in my hoise
Call a repair place. Send the bill to google if they say it’s because of the thermostat

A friend of mine had the same issue. He hold me to reseat the wires used for the heater. I took a pic of the wires, pulled them all. Blew any dust out of the nest inputs for the wires. and then pushed each wire back in until it wouldn't go any further.
It's been several days without any issues, heat is working great.

Followed Eduardo’s post and used the Contact Us page. The customer service agent I spoke to didn’t recognize error code N416. Spoke to his supervisor and supervisor didn’t recognize it. They had me reboot the thermostat. (Sounded like a bit of a flail, since they didn’t recognize the error code.) I told them that works, but only ever for a few minutes before failing again. They insisted on sending me a replacement thermostat. We’ll try that, but the only thing I am confident of is that it will not fix the problem.
My Gen1 worked flawlessly for years before Google scammed me out of a lot of money to replace them with a poorer quality substitute.
Has anyone looked into whether Ecobee or Honeywell learning thermostats are functional as replacements for a Gen1 Nest? I’m considering returning all three of my Learning Thermostats and going with another company.

Does anyone have a humidifier connected to the system and the error happened after turning the humidifier on?
11-18-2025 06:01 AM
I do. I'm not sure when the system error appears. I don't think it's related to my humidifier but I could be wrong.

I fully unconnected all my wiring, blew out the connectors, made sure there was plenty of wire and reconnected everything. I've not had any issues in over two weeks. A friend of mine had the same issue. His wire for the heater was not FULLY inserted. He pulled it out, reseated it until it would not go in any further. He's not had the error come back in over a year.

N416 error. 4th gen. Just started happening. A soft reset fixed it for now.

I did that and two days later it’s back

**bleep** thing shorted out the contactor board in my air handler during the heating test I discovered. It was under warranty, but they suspect a faulty charge from the new thermostat to the unit jolted it bad enough to short out that part. It was under warranty, but I had to pay labor. $300. The value of the new thermostat? What a rip. Probably going to ask Google for my money back on this one.

Followed this thread for a few days because I was having the same problem. N416 error would randomly pop up. Initially, restarting the thermostat worked. After a few days, the error came back and only totally power cycling the furnace itself would work (turning the breaker off for a few minutes and turning it back on). Eventually nothing worked and I was left with a cold house. The circuit board fuse also kept popping every time I did a power cycle.
Called a local HVAC company and when they came out, they discovered the power wire for the furnace was dangling next to the blower motor shaft. Over time, the what wore away at the insulation on the wire causing it to spark against the metal shaft. Some electrical tape and zip ties and the problem was fixed.

Same issue as everyone else. N416 keeps appearing. Comes and goes. They don't have a fix for it.. they just keep having me move my wires around or reseating them. They don't even have a link to it on the support page. Bad software plain and simple. Sometimes I'll wake up and the house hasn't had heat all night and I reset the the thermostat and *poof* I have heat again. This only lasts for a day or so until it detects a "system issue" again. Never happened on the old thermostat. Not one time. Can't go back to it though- apparently it's been blowing fuses on your hvac if you go back to the old one they (coincidentally) don't want you to use anymore. This has class action written all over it.
I do have a humidifier plugged into this thermostat. Might be important for potential software fixes.
