Nest Android app keeps playing notification sound

darkstar107
Community Member

I have the nest app running on a Pixel 4a on Android 13. The only device I have in it is a Nest Learning Thermostat. Almost every time I open the app it plays the notification sound and vibrates. Sometimes, if I leave the app open, it'll play the notification sound a few times in a row.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the app.

Hello darkstar107,

Thanks for posting to the Google Nest Community forum. I'd love to help!

Even if vibrate mode is off, the Nest app could be trying to tell you something. If your Android phone keeps vibrating or alerting randomly, check the notification settings of the Nest app.

Let's try the steps in this guide:

  1. Navigate to Settings and go to Notifications.
  2. Check your notification settings for the Nest app.
  3. Tap the Notification Sound button and check if you set your terminal to vibrate when you get a notification from that app.
    1. Turn off the alarms and make them vibrate.

Please let us know if you need more help.

Best regards,

Mark

Hello,

I've tried disabling all notifications for the app, but it still does it.  It doesn't do it when the app is in the background or closed and there's no visual notification; it only does it when I open the app.  I seem to recall it starting after updating to Android 13.

Hi there,

Thanks for letting us know, and I'm sorry if the issue still persists.

Going over these steps here might help:

  1. Try restarting your phone for at least 2 minutes.
  2. Check for any possible messages or alerts in the Nest app that might trigger the app to keep notifying you without any visual notification.
  3. Clear the cache on the Nest app.
    1. Go to your phone's settings > Apps > Nest > Clear Cache.

Let me know if that works.

Best regards,

Mark

Hi there,

I'm checking back in. Were you able to do the steps above? I'd be glad to hear from you — I'd like to make sure everything is working.

Best regards,

Mark

Hello,

Sorry for the late response. I did try all of that as well as clearing all the apps data and reinstalling. Nothing has resolved the issue.

Hi there,

I'm sorry to hear the issue is still persists. Let's try the steps in this guide:

  1. On the Nest app. Select the drop-down menu on the top left corner and go to messages.
    1. If there are any notifications, try reading all the unread alerts and checking if there are any that need to be addressed.
  2. Try using a different device with the Nest app and logging in using the same email account.

Please let me know how it goes, or if the issue still persists.

Best regards,

Mark

Hi darkstar107,

It's me again. I wanted to follow up and see if you are still in need of any help. Please let me know if you are still having any trouble from here, as I would be happy to take a closer look and assist you further.

Best regards,

Mark

Hi, sorry for the delayed response; I've been busy. There are no notifications and if I log in on another device it doesnt have the same issue.

Hey there,

Thanks for getting back to us and for trying the steps.

It appears that the problem is most likely with the phone settings that you're using with the Nest App. I'd suggest toggling off and on the notifications and permission settings and restarting your phone to refresh might help.

Feel free to let us know if you have more questions in mind.

Best regards,

Mark

I've tried completely disabling notifications and rebooting. The app still makes the notification sound.

I have the same issue. It started on my previous device (pixel 3XL) and continues on my pixel 7 pro. When I open the Nest app I get a loud notification sound and vibration. Subsequent openings of the app do not reproduce that effect until some time has passed or if I restart the phone. It's not something in the notification settings on the app and I also tried turning off home away assist.

I'm glad I'm not the only one but that's disappointing that it followed you to a new device.

Hi everyone,

@Greenaspere, I'm sorry to hear that you're also having the same issue with your Android phones. I'd be happy to take a look into this for you as well.

Thanks for giving it a shot and for keeping me on the loop, @darkstar107.

Let's find out more about what's going on. Do you have any other Nest devices, and what are they? Also, could you please give these steps another shot?

  1. Check for software updates on your phones. Obsolete OS versions may break some app functionality.
  2. Force the Nest app to close. Go to your phone's Settings > Apps > Nest > Force stop.
    1. Then there's storage and caching. Tap Clear Cache and Clear Storage.
  3. Re-open the Nest app. It will prompt you to choose a Google Account to sign in with and select a home, which should then sync from the cloud. You will need to turn on the phone location again if you're using Home/Away Routines and re-allow permissions for the app.
  4. Restart the phone.

Let us know if it works.

Best regards,

Mark

Hello,

I have tried forcing the app to stop as well as clearing the cache and the data (as well as uninstalling and reinstalling). I've also tried rebooting several times. This does not resolve the issue.

I have tried disabling all notifications in the Nest app as well and it still plays the sound.

I know I'm not the OP, but I'm invested in this outcome and I should add that when I run the Nest App on my Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 it doesn't make the notification sound or vibration. Same Nest account and Nest devices on both Android devices.

What version of Android?  I'm using it on a Pixel 4a on Android 13 which is the device i'm having the issue on.  If I log in on my wife's Pixel 3 on Android 12, I don't have the issue.  I would think that if it was a specific problem with Pixel devices runing Android 13 that there would be a lot more complaints about this issue though.

Hello there,

I'm sorry for the trouble this may have caused. We'd love to know more about this.

Please fill out this form and let me know once it's done.

Thanks,

Mark

My Pixel 7 pro is on Android 13 of course. My previous pixel phone was not since it was EOL. I think it was Android 12 and it had the same issue. My Samsung Tablet is on Android 12 and doesn't have the issue. I also found this thread where someone concluded it was a Pixel issue. Every time I open the nest app, it makes a loud noise/notification sound. How do I get rid of it? - ...

I messed with the Home Away assist settings and stopped having the phone provide it and now it seems the problem has stopped. I'm trying to turn it back on to verify the problem returns but there's an error right now.

Hi Greenaspere,

Thanks for getting back to us; I appreciate your efforts in isolating the issue using other Android devices. It appears it's not the Nest app itself; it's more like a general setting on your Pixel phone. I'd like to suggest that you contact our Pixel team to report this so that they can look into it further.

I'll close the thread in 24 hours. If you have any questions, please feel free to create a new post.

Regards,

Mark
