Nest E "Starting in 2:30"

Searched high and low about this problem, hopefully someone here can help. We've had this Nest E installed for about 5 years and it's worked great until now. For the last couple of weeks we get a message on the device that says "Starting in 2:30." It looks like it should be a countdown, but it never does. Just stays at 2:30 for hours. During this time the fan runs but not the AC compressor, so we get no cold air. Eventually it starts working again but it can take more than a full day after which the house is super hot.

The thermostat has a good C wire and battery voltage is 3.9V. Voc, Vin, and Iin are all within range so it doesn't appear to be a setup problem or a battery problem. Again, it's been trouble free for 5 years and nothing that I know of had changed. Help!

Hello JLMarx,

Thank you for taking the time to let us know about your inquiry.

It appears that you are experiencing a power-related issue. To isolate:

  • What type of system do you have? (Heat Pump or Conventional Type)
    • For Heat pumps:
      • Did you check the O/B wire configuration and try changing the O-wire to B-wire configuration or vice versa?
    • For conventional types:
      • Did you verify if the heating still works?
  • Does it have a C-wire?
    • Please share with us your Nest Thermostat's Voc, Vin, and Lin power readout status.
  • Check their air filter, as a clogged filter might cause a symptom.

I'll look forward to your response.

Regards,

Mark

Hey there,

I wanted to follow up and see if you are still in need of any help. Please let me know if you are still having any trouble from here, as I would be happy to take a closer look and assist you further.

Thanks,

Mark

Thanks for your help, Mark. I've solved the issue and I'm leaving my solution here for others to find.

I have 2 Nest E's in my house, so as a troubleshooting method I switched them. The problem followed the thermostat, so I knew for sure there was no problem with the HVAC system or the wiring (as I suspected based on the voltage readings). At that point I removed the thermostat from my Nest app/account and did a factory reset on the thermostat. I went through the setup process from the beginning and all has been working fine since, about a week. In the end it was a software bug in the thermostat.
