Nest Gen 3 Power Issue

Hi All,

I had a gen 2 nest that was working great and recently upgraded to the 3rd gen. Its a used version from a family friend that hadnt been used in a while. Long story short, I plugged the gen 3 into a USB power source and it fired up so I switched out my gen 2 for 3. I thought I was good to go but I can home and the nest had a message it was shutting down due to low power.

So question, does the gen 3 require more power that my system isnt capable of or what am i missing? My Wire set up is Y1, G, W1, Rh. I did consider going into the power setting on the device when its on the wall and reviewing the power numbers which I can add in here if that would help. Thanks in advance.

Hey there mmccnest!

I understand you're having some trouble transitioning from thermostat generations. Here's some information that can help you out.

Since you had the 2nd generation Nest Learning Thermostat, the system should be fully compatible and not require any extra power from your unit. Checking the technical info values you provided, it seems your unit is powering the thermostat adequately. However, the battery level is a bit low.

My first recommendation is to make sure your router has a stable connection. Poor Wi-Fi connection can drain the battery as the thermostat constantly tries to reconnect. A low battery can make it harder for the thermostat to maintain a stable connection.

If your router hasn't been experiencing any stability issues, I suggest filling out this Contact Us form. Doing so will allow you to connect with our support team and determine the best course of action.

Let me know how it goes.

Regards,
Angel
