Nest Heat Pump Dual Fuel Early On on furnace

Jeff42
Community Member

I recently added a heat pump to my forced air furnace. Everything works great, except Early On.

I have tried all of the recommended settings I could find online. I hope it it still learning how long it takes to heat the home, but my history shows that the furnace is only kicking in at the scheduled heat time of 6:30. There are no other indications it is still learning. I would like it to be at temperature by 6:30.

it is cold enough outside now that the heat pump isn’t engaged at all. This is only using the furnace, which is setup aa auxiliary heat.

Hi Jeff42,

Thanks for reaching out. I'm sorry to hear that you're having an issue with the Early-On feature. I'd love to know more about this. When did you install the Heat Pump? Early-On continually adapts to the weather forecast and how fast your home heats up or cools down. It adapts to improve its Time-to-Temperature estimates and keeps you comfortable while also helping you save energy.

Thanks,

Edward

Hera pump was installed in early November.  When it was installed we set the temperature to be the same 24/7.  It was only when it started to use the furnace that I reenabled the schedule.  Early on gave no indication it was working.  The furnace kicks in exactly at the scheduled time.

I have tried many settings, including home/away, which I don’t like.

Currently Time to temperature doesn’t show anything.  The screen only has a done button.

I waited a while before replying to this to see if it just needed time.

Hi Jeff42,

Nest thermostats detect what wires you have inserted into the connectors and use System Match to tell what kind of heating and cooling system you have. If Early-On isn’t compatible with your system, Early-On settings aren’t available in the app or on your thermostat.

When Early-On settings aren’t available, it may mean:

  • You have an incompatible system.
  • There could be a wiring issue that makes your thermostat think you have an incompatible system.
  • Your thermostat’s software needs to be updated. To update your thermostat’s software, connect your thermostat to Wi-Fi and check if there's an available software update. You can disconnect your thermostat from Wi-Fi once the update is complete.

Check what kind of system you have installed. Then, check your thermostat wiring:

  1. If your system warms the floors or radiators in your home, you have a radiant system. Early-On doesn’t work with radiant systems. Instead, radiant systems use True Radiant to manage preheating.
  2. If your system blows air through vents in your home, you have a forced air system, and there should be Early-On settings. If not, your thermostat may not be wired correctly or may think it’s connected to a different type of system.
  3. Check your thermostat’s wiring. Pull off the thermostat’s display. If there’s no wire in the G connector, your thermostat may assume it’s connected to a different type of system because G wires control the fans that push air through the vents in your home.
  4. Check your heat type. On your thermostat, go to Settings Nest settings icon  Equipment  Heat Type on your thermostat. Make sure to select the type of heating that you have: Forced Air, In-floor radiant or Radiator.
  5. If you think that the wires are configured incorrectly, contact a professional HVAC technician to help you correct your system wiring and setup.

Check this link for more details about Early On.

Best,

Mel

The Early on settings are all there.  It just doesn’t start my furnace any earlier than the scheduled time.

My gas furnace is setup as the auxiliary heat source.  But from what I understand, it is supposed to be.

I have the same setup and seem to be having the same issue. Have you found a solution?

Hello folks,

I'm sorry for the late response. I know it has been a while, but I wanted to ensure that everything was covered here.

If you both have the learning thermostats (Nest Learning Thermostat and Nest Thermostat E), Please make sure to disable the auto-schedule and the Home and Away Assist. These settings will affect the early-on learning of your schedule as they're programmed to adjust automatically. Please let me know if that helps, or if the issue still persists.

Thanks for helping here, Mel.

Best regards,

Mark

Thanks for reaching out. I was able to figure out that the reason early on was not working for me was that I was re-adjusting some of the heatpump settings in Nest for a few days trying to find my preferred low temperature when it would switch to gas. It seemed like any time I changed settings, the Nest would reset the "learning clock" and it would not execute early on. Once I left my settings alone for about a week, early on started working as expected.
