Nest Heats Past the Set Temperature

My HVAC System has functioned correctly for years with my Nest Thermometer. In the past several weeks, the unit heats well beyond the set level of the thermometer. For example, If the inside temperature is 70 degrees, and the Nest heat temp is set at 72 degrees, the unit will come on and heat but will never shut off and heat indefinitely. I have come home to a house heated to the mid-e80s several times in the past few weeks. I have removed all schedules and learning features and this seems to have no effect. I have followed the advice of @CoolingWizard in this thread https://www.googlenestcommunity.com/t5/Nest-Thermostats/My-nest-won-t-stop-heating-up-the-house/m-p/.... After the heat in engaged and the Nest Thermostat is removed from the wall the heat stops relatively quickly (less than 2 minutes). Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Hi tezizzm,

Uh-oh! If your HVAC system is not shutting off and continues to heat indefinitely, there might be a few potential causes for this issue. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can take:

  1. You can try adjusting the Early-On setting in the Nest Thermostat's settings menu. Lowering the setting may help prevent the system from overheating.
  2. Ensure that the wiring between your HVAC system and the Nest Thermostat is correctly installed and securely connected. Loose or incorrect wiring can cause issues with temperature control. Double-check the wiring connections to ensure they match the recommended configuration for your specific HVAC system.
  3. It's possible that the temperature sensors in your Nest Thermostat are experiencing calibration issues, leading to inaccurate temperature readings. You can try recalibrating the temperature sensors by restarting your Nest Thermostat.
  4. Make sure your Nest Thermostat is running the latest firmware version. Firmware updates can address bugs or compatibility issues that may affect the thermostat's performance. Check the Nest app or Nest website for any available updates and follow the instructions to install them if necessary.
  5. If the above steps don't resolve the issue, you can try performing a factory reset on your Nest Thermostat and reconfiguring it from scratch. This can help eliminate any software glitches or misconfigurations that might be causing the problem. However, note that performing a reset will erase all settings and configurations, so be prepared to set up your thermostat again.

Let us know how it goes.

Best,

Zoe
