Hi Jade22,

Thank you so much for reaching out to the community! I understand the issue you are experiencing with your Nest Thermostat. Although the display shows it is off, the heating is constantly running and won't shut down. Don't worry, I'm here to help!

I would like to ask you a few questions in order to provide you with the most accurate troubleshooting steps:

  • What type of Nest Thermostat do you have?
  • Is the Nest thermostat newly installed?
  • What type of furnace do you have? (gas, electric, etc.)
  • Have you recently experienced a brownout or blackout?
  • What other strange symptoms have you experienced since the problem started?
  • Are there any error messages? If so, what are they exactly?
  • When was the last maintenance check for your HVAC system?
  • Has there been any recent changes or upgrades to your HVAC system?

For the moment, I would like you to perform the following troubleshooting steps:

  • Please remove the thermostat from the baseplate and check if the heat is still running.
  • Check the thermostat’s settings:
    • Home & Away Routines and Home/Away Assist settings:
      • Nest app:
        • Open the Nest app > tap Settings Nest > Home/Away Assist > Home or Away > select the thermostat > switch off automatic switching.
      • Home app:
        • Open the Google Home app > tap Tap Automations > Home or Away > select the thermostat action > tap Remove action > Save.
  • Make sure the thermostat wires are completely inserted to the terminals.

Please feel free to share any additional details you think might be relevant.

Best regards,
Eduardo

I had the same problem. I had to return not one but two 4th gen Nest thermostats. Google rolled out the 4th gen without fixing this glitch.
