Nest Keeps Hijacking My Home

Leeisme

Okay, I'm getting frustrated y'all. I've had nest thermostats and a nest account for several years. I've lived in a few locations, including at my parents, where my account has been associated with both my Google home and their Google home. 6-8 months ago I logged into the nest app, and all of my devices were missing. After factory resetting and attempting to re-add the device to MY home, it kept adding it to my parents home with them being the owner and me not being able to see it, despite having no access to their home and not having it registered in nest or Google.

After a call with Google, they pretty much told me I'm f*****.  After about 5 factory resets and a lot of anger, it finally started working and I have no idea why.

Fast forward to now - my thermostat has set itself up on a crappy schedule. I just opened the nest app to find that:

A. I have no devices (despite having a nest camera and thermostat), and

B. I'm not the owner of my home, my mom is.

Our accounts are not affiliated at all and she has NEVER been made an owner or manager on any account I've created. Now, I have no devices and no control over my home. I'm afraid to factory reset this and nest/Google support are outrageously stupid.  What could be causing this issue and why, when I use MY credentials and MY account on MY home does it automatically add it to someone else instead and HOW do I reclaim control of devices that I purchased?

Also, to note, the devices still show up in my Google home app, but not the nest app, and I can't configure my freaking schedule.

Hi Leeismo,

Thank you for posting in the community. I understand that your Nest devices aren't from the Nest app, but they are under the Google home app and I apologize for any inconvenience caused. I'm happy to help you!
To help me find the best solution, I'll need to ask you a few questions:

  • What kind of Nest camera and thermostat do you have?
  • Is the app and your phone system up to date?
  • In the Nest app, are you under the correct home structure?
    • Are you signed in with Google or with Nest?

Regarding your questions probably someone joined your home structure as an owner therefore please follow the steps below check:

  • Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  • Tap Settings Rusell_0-1740522096867.png.
  • Under the home name, tap the profile icons of people in the home.
  • Select the profile icon of the person.

Keep me posted.

Best regards,

Rusell.

Russell,

I was a manager on all external homes and owner on my own. No one besides me is an owner on my home. I'm a software engineer and DBA and take security seriously, I don't play with that.

This happened multiple times.  The first time was several months ago.  To attempt to resolve the issue I removed myself from every home I was in EXCEPT my home, and the device STILL added to another home I was no longer associated with.

Long story short, I deleted every home I owned, removed myself from every home I've ever been in, created a brand new home that did NOT have the name "Home" (as that's also what my parents is called), and after a few hours of resetting every **bleep** device I have and losing every routine I've created, it finally f****** works like it should have from the get.

There are bugs in Googles nest integration, I'm pretty certain of it.

Thanks, Google, for once again wasting my time.

Edit: all frustration directed @ Google, the company, and not you or any other individual. Between Google constantly changing activated voice commands, to routines repeating/not executing, devices disappearing, and this less-than-par nest integration, I'm beyond frustrated with Google.

Thank you for your response. I appreciated all the information you shared, so for now, I'd like to ask you additional questions regarding your inconvenience.

  • Has the inconvenience been resolved?
  • What kind of cell phone are you using?
