Nest Learning Gen 3 Thermostat Mysteriously Adds Heating Setpoints - Mainly Overnight

Problem:  The Google Nest Learning Thermostat continues to randomly alter the heating setpoint overnight, typically (but not exclusively) between Midnight (0000 hrs) to 6am (0600 hrs).  The number of times when temperature setpoints are altered can vary from day to day.  The problem was so pervasive that the decision was reached to do a Factory Restart.  This erased all history, auto-schedule points as well as forcing the thermostat to be reinstalled.  To further ensure that all operational anomalies were removed, the thermostat was removed from the Nest App.  The software installation process (with selections shown below) was followed meticulously after the thermostat rebooted.  As an initial test, the thermostat was set manually for one time and then again in the evening.  No other changes were made during the day or overnight.  Still the Energy History showed two Temperature Setpoint Changes made at approximately 3am when we were asleep.  Therefore, with every “Learning Function” and “Home/Away Assist” turned OFF, the thermostat still indicates multiple changes in the temperature setpoint.  What else can be done to eliminate this problem?

Background:  A Google Learning Thermostat was recently installed.  During installation all Nest controlling aspects were either turned off or not enabled to begin with.  Examples of the Nest Thermostat’s controlling aspects that were not initially turned ON or Turned OFF include:

  • Local utility rewards - Declined
  • Home/Away Assist – OFF
  • Mode - Heat

Nest Sense

  • Auto-Schedule – Off
  • Time-to-Temp – Ready
  • Early On – Off
  • Cool to Dry – Off
  • Sunblock – Off
  • Leaf – Ready
  • Airwave – On

Options

  • Eco Temperatures – 60F Heating & Off Cooling
  • Safety Temperature – 45F Heating & Off Cooling
  • Fan Schedule – Off

About

  • Where – Dining Room
  • Equipment – Gas Forced Air
  • Technical Info – Appears complete

The exact same thing is happening in my home and no matter how many times I turn off the Auto Schedule/ Learn Temperature function, or whatever it is, it keeps happening

Hello folks,

I'm sorry for the delay in response and for the trouble this may have caused with the unexpected temperature change. Let's sort this out.

Do you have a schedule of temperatures created? If so, please check all the possible duplicates or temperature ranges created and clear or edit if needed to avoid random system activation. Also, if you added your home members to access the thermostat, please make sure to disable the Home and Away Assist on their phones to make sure that it won't contribute to the location access, which would trigger an unexpected temperature mode change.

Please let me know if that helps or if the issue still persists.

Regards,

Mark
