Nest Learning Pro 3 low battery

Jasonj72
Community Member

Indicates low battery preventing me from connecting to wifi. I tried charging in usb port but doesn’t help.  Before it ran low on battery I had heat working but AC was turning on and off every 5 minutes. I have no c wire - previous thermostat had a jumper.  I understand the nest has an internal jumper. Do I have something wired wrong that it is not utilizing it?

Hi Jasonj72,

Thanks for reaching out to the Google Nest community. We’re sorry to hear you're having this issue. Let’s look deeper into this. Please answer the following:

  1. Are you from North America or Europe?
  2. What type of Nest Thermostat are you planning to have?
  3. When did the issue start to happen?
  4. Do you have a multimeter?

Also, let's gather power readings of your Nest Thermostat. Follow the steps below:

For the Nest Learning Thermostat and Nest Thermostat E:

  1. Press the thermostat ring to bring up the Quick View menu.
  2. Turn the ring to Settings and press to select.
  3. Turn the ring to Technical Info and press to select.

For the Nest Thermostat 2020:

  1. Tap the touch bar to bring up the Menu view.
  2. Slide your finger down to Settings, then tap to select.
  3. Slide your finger to Equipment > Power Info.

I look forward to your response.

Best,

Renz

Renz - thank you for you help.  Here are my answers...

North America

I have a Nest Learning Pro 3 thermostat

I did learn that the Nest draws power through the fan wire and because I had the fan running continuously that this was causing the thermostat to have a low battery issue.  I have now disabled the fan, the Nest has sufficent charge.  The issue that I still have is that when the air conditioner runs, it short cycles...it will run for about 2 minutes and then the condenser will stop and only the fan will run.  After 5 minutes, it starts up again and runs for just a minute or two, instead of running continuously.

Power details:

Battery: 3.699V

Voc: 35.25V

Vin: 24.96V

Iin: 20 mA(i)

Hello Jasonj72,

Thanks for getting back to us and for sharing additional information. Let's check this further. Based on the power reading you shared, the VIN is quite low, the voltage reading for it should be around 29 to 42 volts. Check your HVAC air filters if they're dirty, clean them, and observe if the issue persists.

Also, if I may ask, when did the issue start to happen?

Keep us posted.

Regards,

Renz

I changed the filters just last week.  This has been an issue since I installed the Nest only 3 weeks ago.
