I followed the instructions and wired up my base connecting R to red, G to Green, W1 to White, and C to Blue, just like on my old thermostat. The wires are fully inserted, the tabs are down, and the power is on (I used a voltmeter to check the wires going into the base). When I insert the Nest Learning unit onto the base, and push until it clicks, NOTHING HAPPENS. No matter how many times I reinsert it, with no wires obstructing it, nothing. No lights at all.
I then took the unit and plugged it into a USB charger. I started immediately with a green flashing light, Google logos, then a message to insert on its base. So I insert it onto its base again and it then says thermostat is restarting - back in a bit. It then goes dark, and nothing happens.
Is there a way I can force the unit to look for its electrical and mechanical connections?

I contacted support and they helped me solve it as follows:
1) charge the unit using usb for another hour
2) disconnect the C wire and mask it off
Unit now restarts when connected to base and setup completed. Thank you all.

Try charging it overnight with the usb cable maybe the battery is very low.

I charged it for an hour and reinstalled it. Nothing has changed. When plugged into the USB, the nest starts up and then shows a message saying plug into base station. When plugged into the base station it then shows the message saying back in a bit and it turns off and doesn't restart. No flashing gren, nothing.
I tested the voltages on my wires and both the red and the blue show 24 volts ac to ground.
So the device is getting power and it knows when it has been connected to the base plate but for some reason it will not restart.

So You tested with a meter and put the red probe on the red wire, and black probe on the blue wire, and you have approx 24V AC.
That should be good for the Nest to power on.
You have red wire in the Rh or Rc terminal?
Try the other R terminal see if anything happens.

Confirmed, with red on Red and black on Blue, 24VAC (same Red-Green, and Red-White).
I tried Rc as well as Rh when trying to get it to work yesterday.
Is there a way to force the device to report on its connections? When I try to run the Nest setup, all goes well until the setup needs a number from the device which I cannot get as it wont start up on base, and does very little when connected to a USB. Is there anything I can do if I connect it to a PC?

Not sure what else to tell you to try it seems like you wired it correctly.
If you can get to the menu with it on the USB cable, that says "factory reset" maybe try that.
Hopefully one of the Nest reps will chime in and assist you.

No all good now as soon as we figured that the C wire was unnecessary. Thanks all!
