Nest Learning Thermostat Gen 4 Humidifier Control

Both the Nest Learning Thermostat Gen 4 and the Goggle home app are missing settings that are described in the help section. Upon installation and initial setup, from factory settings, some options for humidifier solenoid relay operation are present. Once set up, there is no longer an option, in settings, to alter the configuration despite the help tab indication so. Help offers the following instructions but there is no System Configuration Tab on the humidity screen, nor is it present on the thermostat itself. It seems to be a programming oversight. Accordingly, I’ll have to reset the thermostat to factory settings in order to alter the humidifier relay setting. Quite annoying.

Relay orientation when dehumidifier is active

Most dehumidifiers are active when relay is closed, but if you need to change this setting:

  1. Open the Home app
  2. Tap Favorites or Devices
    Tap your thermostat
    Settings-Thermostat-Humidity.
  3. Tap System configuration.
  4. In the Relay orientation when dehumidifier active section, select whether your dehumidifier is active when the relay is Open or Closed.

Same problem for me. I just submitted Feedback on the issue.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who’s run into this, and surprised that more people haven’t discovered the error. I have a bypass humidifier and the Gen 4 is turning on the water when the furnace is not running, I thought: That’s an easy fix (at least it was on the Gen 3) only to discover the system configuration settings aren’t accessible outside of initial setup. I’ve got an elevated trouble ticket in on this and I’m hoping they understand and correct the oversight. The Gen 3 UI was intuitive, complete and stable, Gen 4, not so much.

I’m also dissatisfied with the humidifier control on gen 4. Needing to factory reset to change settings is preposterous. And neither heat integrated or standalone work the way it did on gen 3. I don’t want it running with the fan all the time. I also don’t want it turning on heat over my preferred setting when the humidity is low. Why doesn’t there seem to be an option to run the humidifier only when there is a call for heat? Why is this thread what I get when I google for a solution?

After hours on chat, and through email, I was able to (I think) make the point that there is a programming issue with the Gen 4 user interface and, at the very least, access to  System Configuration settings. This was a maddening process. My clear and concise description of the issue continued to be met with directions to the System Configuration tab that doesn’t exist. I think I finally got through to them and this was the final reply I received from Google:

Thank you so much for your understanding. This issue will be documented and will be put in our top priority for the improvement of our services.

I then replied, asking if they are definitively acknowledging the programming oversight, if we should expect a fix soon and I’ve received no further correspondence. Google, if you’re watching this thread, you must do better! You had a well functioning product in Gen 3 and just needed a few additions to make Gen 4 great. As it is now, you’ve made Gen 4 less functional than its predecessor and I’m sure, as these threads are reviewed, sales will lag accordingly.
