Nest Learning Thermostat heating when it's set to cool

OMG!  I have spent over an hour with support and they are extremely dense and it's questionable if English is the first language based on the canned responses.  We have three nest learning thermostats on our property.  Two in our main home and one in our guest home/airbnb.  Yesterday, our airbnb was to be rented out and we turned on the air conditioning and noticed it was heating, not cooling.  The nest dial was showing cooling, but the temperature kept increasing and getting hotter as it heated instead of cooled.   We assumed there was something wrong with our HVAC and called for service.  Today, everything checks out fine on the HVAC unit and the serviceman stated that they had several calls recently for the same thing and it turns out the nest is faulty.  He suggested we swap out the dial with a working one from the main house to see if that corrected the problem.  It did!!  That was all we did.  Swapped out the dial.  Took the defective dial to the other house and put it where we had just removed the working one, and it did the same thing it was doing at the cottage.  Proves it's a defective dial.  I have been trying for an hour to figure out how to get it fixed and customer service wants me to turn off power, switch wiring, and all sorts of other things.  I have reiterated multiple times that it can't be the wiring because all three of our wirings are correct, and they all work perfectly when we have a known working dial connected. They will not help me unless I go through all the troubleshooting steps, even though it's obvious what is wrong.  It makes zero sense for us to switch the wiring and have to turn off our power/breakers to troubleshoot.  We don't want to blow our working nests.  It's way too hot for that!  Any ideas on what might be wrong on the dial?  Anyone else have issues with them wanting to help with a warranty item?

I've been dealing with almost the same thing intermittently, when we switch from WARM to COOL it won't kick in the cooling.  From what I've read, we need to install a C wire - our NEST doesn't have a C wire which provides more power to the unit.
for me, I turn off the thermostat for over night then turn it back on in the morning and all works fine for a while until the unit's battery starts to deplete and can't handle it anymore, then system won't cool.

If i have to add a C wire for Nest to work, I'll be switching over to Amazon Smart Thermostat and ditching the Nest

Hello folks,

I'm sorry for the experience and to hear that you're both having issues with your Nest thermostats. I'd be happy to take a look at this.

@thestampqueen, I appreciate the hours you've spent taking all the possible steps with us. Can we have your support ID number so we can check on other possible options?

@TaP-Fixer, thanks for reaching out; let's sort this out. It appears to be a power-related issue. Could you tell me more about what's happening? What type of Nest Thermostat is this? Also, please check your thermostat's power readings in the Technical Info settings or Equipment settings.

Regards,
Mark

Update: after hours of speaking with customer service I asked for a supervisor and the nest was replaced. Now, just to make sure they don’t charge me. Exchange was returned today.

Hi thestampqueen,

That's a relief! Thanks for the update. I'm glad to hear that it was sorted out, but I want to ensure that everything was covered. Can I have the support ID number so I can review the replacement status?

Best,

Mark
