Nest Learning Thermostat still cooling when reaches set temperature

Lacyn1121

I have my thermostat set to cool to 72. The thermostat ready my current temp as 71 but the AC is still running. What could be the issue and how to I resolve it? Or is this normal?

I just installed a Nest 1st Gen Thermostat over the weekend and am having the same problem. Set the desired temp to 72 last night and indoor temp was 72 yet still said it would take 20 minutes to reach 72. Here is a screenshot. I keep a little digital thermometer by the bed, it said the room temp was 66 which is very possible because the thermostat is outside my room in the hallway. With the a/c just running and running, my room was freezing! Anyone have advice? I'm already thinking about returning the Nest because it just isn't worth it if my electric bills are going to increase.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for reaching out here in the Google Nest Community.

The Nest Thermostat, like any other thermostat, is working like a remote control that sends signals or commands to your AC or furnace when to turn off and on. I'd like to know if it didn't turn off even after reaching the set temperature or even a degree higher? If not, we could revisit the settings from the Nest Thermostat settings > go to equipment then select the right type of heating or cooling system you're using. Also, check if there's any temperature schedule being set that your Nest Thermostat is following beyond your set tempetaure.

I hope it helps.

Best regards,

Ryan

Hey there,

Hi Ryan, thanks for checking back. Yes I am still having problems with the air running even though the set temperature was reached. Latest example is last night, at 2:24 am the set temp was 73, and the thermostat showed the indoor temp was 73, yet it said Cooling and the air was running, until at least 3am (I fell asleep soon after that).

I've done some online research on this topic and learned some thermostats keep cooling or heating for a few minutes until the unit understands the fact the set temp has met, my concern is with my Nest it keeps running for 30 minutes or more, which is not energy efficient.

The a/c unit I have is very new (installed in 2021) and I have all the settings entered correctly.

Hey seashell,

Thanks for the reply and for providing further details of what's happening.

Could you share a photo of your current wiring configurations? I'd like to check further what we can see and change from the equipment settings.

I hope to hear from you soon.

Regards,

Ryan

How do I add a Picture

Hello, I'm still having the issue, life is busy ya know so have been unable to respond until now.

I've attached a few pics.  One with the wiring of my old thermostat, and one with my Nest.

Also attached is a screen shot of the app, showing the indoor temperature as 72, the thermostat set to 73, and my a/c in Cooling mode and going to take 10 minutes to reach 73 degrees...which does not make sense at all if the indoor temp is 72.

I received my first electric bill since installing my Nest and it is 20% higher than it was during same period last year as well as higher than last month which was similar temperature/weather. I live in the South and hot temps have been consistent during summer months year over year, and I checked the price per kilowatt, it is same as it was last summer. Thank you.

Hi seashell,

Thanks for the reply and for including the photos.

Have you tried checking on the temperature schedule and performing a reset with it? Also, we could try doing a complete reset on your Nest Thermostat to make sure.

Ryan

Hi Ryan, I do use the schedule feature however I don't see how that can have anything to do with the problem I'm having. The thermostat is adjusting based on the schedule I have set, it just keeps running and running even when the set temperature is reached, and I have this same problem even when not using the schedule.

I will try the complete reset at the soonest opportunity.

Based on the photos I sent, can you confirm the wires are correct?

Also any thoughts on that app screen shot I sent that shows the indoor temp at 72 and the thermostat set to 73 yet still in cooling mode and indicating it would reach 73 in under 10 minutes (even though the indoor temp is already 72)?

Hi seashell,

Thanks for the reply and we're sorry for the delay.

The wiring configuration on your Nest Thermostat seems to be correct and like any other thermostats, Nest Thermostat has a built-in delay feature that protects your system from any problems. Check out this link to learn more about it.

Let us know how it goes after you've tried the complete reset of your Nest Thermostat.

Regards,

Ryan
