Nest Temperature Sensor won't connect

Kristine0818
Community Member

When I first setup my Learning Thermostat and connected the Sensor, it worked great for a few hours apparently,  as 24hrs later I got notification the sensor was offline. So I tried all the trouble shooting. Changed batteries and everything.  I can add the sensor,  but the connection will not work. The sensor is sitting  less than 2ft from the Thermostat so there shouldn't be any obstruction due to walls and such.  What do I do? Is it a lemon?

Hi Kristine0818,

Thanks for reaching out to the Community. I am sorry that you are having issues with your Thermostat and your Nest Temperature Sensor. But no need to worry, help is here.

I understand that you already tried some basic troubleshooting steps for your Nest Temperature Sensor that isn't connecting. Here are some additional things you can try:

Double-Check Connection Essentials:

  • Battery: I understand that you ensured that the batteries in the sensor are fresh and properly inserted.
  • Distance: You also made sure the sensor is within 50 feet (15 meters) of your thermostat.
  • Bluetooth: Verify that Bluetooth is enabled on your phone or tablet that you're using with the Nest app.

Reset and Re-add:

  • Reset Sensor: Locate the reset button on the sensor (usually a small hole) and press it with a paperclip for a few seconds. This will reset the sensor to factory settings.
  • Re-add in Nest App: Open the Nest app and go through the process of re-adding the Nest Temperature Sensor following the on-screen instructions.

Advanced Troubleshooting:

  • Wi-Fi Network: Though the sensor uses Bluetooth to connect directly to the thermostat, ensure your Wi-Fi network is stable. A weak Wi-Fi signal can sometimes affect overall Nest device communication.
  • Nest App Update: Make sure you're using the latest version of the Nest app on your phone or tablet. Updates often contain bug fixes that might address connectivity issues.
  • Thermostat Reboot: Try restarting your Nest thermostat itself.

Alternative Solutions:

  • Move Sensor (if possible): If the sensor's current location has a lot of interference from electronics or thick walls, try moving it to a different spot with a clearer line of sight to the thermostat.

Please follow this good article to Troubleshoot issues with the Nest Temperature Sensor. There are a few troubleshooting steps to fix the issue.

Let me know how it goes.

Best,

Mario

I am having the exact same problem except mine worked for about 6 months the first time. I've tried everything under the sun and nothing has worked. I even bought a new sensor thinking that was the problem, but the new sensor won't connect. So now I have 2 sensors that won't connect. What could be the issue? Help!

I have the exact same problem beginning around the same time (early July 2024) and have also tried the all the recommendations to no avail. The sensor had performed flawlessly for several years before dropping out at that point. Form submitted. Please help!

I followed the instructions below, and this time it worked. I'm pretty sure I had done the same thing several times, so I'm not sure why it finally took, but it did.

Instructions:

Thanks for reaching out to the Google Nest Customer Care Team. This is Angel, a senior specialist here to help you with your Nest Thermostat and Nest Temperature Sensor.

I apologize for the inconvenience you're experiencing. I understand that despite trying several troubleshooting steps, your Nest Temperature Sensor can't be added correctly to the app.

  • To reset the thermostat's network settings: Go to Settings > Reset > Network. If "Network" isn't available, select "Account connection" instead. Reconnect the thermostat to your network. If you reset the account connection, reconnect the thermostat to your account as well.
  • Run a connection test. Note: If the sensor doesn't appear immediately after refreshing the network connection, try switching to Spaces view and back to the regular view. In the Nest app, go to Settings > Spaces, toggle the switch to enable Spaces, go back, toggle the switch to disable Spaces.
  • Perform a full reset of the sensor: Remove the sensor's battery for 5 minutes, then reinsert it.
  • Unpair and re-pair the sensor with your account.
