Nest Temperature Sensors “unresponsive to HVAC”

BaillieS

I bought a 3-Pack of Nest Temperature Sensors.  They worked for almost 3 months and now randomly, throughout the day, they drop off with the message “unresponsive to HVAC”. This causes my air conditioner to run non-stop. I've tried moving them, uninstalling and reinstalling, and cleaning/replacing batteries and nothing has worked. I wonder if there is another solution or if I received a defective pack. Please help if you can. Thanks!

Hi @BaillieS,

Thank you for posting in the community. I understand that your three Nest Temperature Sensors randomly dropped off, leaving a message "unresponsive to HVAC," after working fine for three months. I also appreciate the information you provided about the troubleshooting you performed with no success. I'm happy to help.

Please provide the information requested below to better understand the cause of this issue:

  • What is the model of your Nest Thermostat?
  • What generation are your Nest Temperature Sensors, 1st gen or 2nd gen?
  • As you mentioned having uninstalled and reinstalled the devices, could you confirm how you did it?
  • What kind of batteries are you using for your sensors?
  • What is the battery level of your thermostat? (Settings > Technical Info > Power)

Based on the troubleshooting you already performed, please follow the steps below to determine if the issue is related to your Nest Temperature Sensors or your system:

  • Run a connection test:
    • Open the Nest app, go to Settings > Nest Temperature Sensors > Affected Sensor > Check Connection.
    • Move the Nest Temperature Sensor close to the thermostat, anywhere from 1 to 3 feet.
    • Note: If the sensor doesn't immediately show in the Nest app or Home app for Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen), try to switch to Spaces view and back to the regular view. In the Nest app, tap Settings > Spaces > Tap the switch to enable > Back > Spaces > Tap the switch to disable. For the Google Home app, make sure that your sensor is connected to your preferred thermostat or try to move closer to the thermostat.
  • Perform a full reset on your Nest Temperature Sensors by removing the batteries from them for 5 minutes and then putting them back.
  • Unpair and pair the sensor back to the account.

Please keep me posted.

Regards,

Anders
