Nest Thermostat Gen2 battery failure, won't restart, green blinking light

Have had Gen2 learning thermostat for 5+ years without issue.  In last month, it has effectively rendered our HVAC useless.  Here is my detailed progression that I hope someone can help from Google Nest instead of reading forum thread after forum thread go unanswered:

1. A month+ ago, the thermostat started giving the error indicating it lost input power.  The simple troubleshooting says to have input voltage to ensure its getting enough power from the HVAC system to keep the nest charged.  CHECK - no issues.

2. A few weeks ago, the battery failed, the nest went dead.  I removed and charged directly using the Mini USB port.  That gave us another week of life.

3. The battery went completely dead (red blinking light).  I read several DIYs ordered an identical battery and reinstalled.  Great!  Green light immediately started blinking indicating software update.

4. Days later of being on charge, it is stuck on the green blinking light of death.  Joined this community and followed instruction to force a reset.  In part, the instruction tells you to plug the thermostat into your computer and ensure it mounts.  CHECK.  It is detected and mounts.

5. While plugged in to my Mac, the Home Screen of the nest thermostat appears, does a little clicking as it cycles through the basic menus and tells me to return to wall base unit. When I return it, I start the entire cycle over again.  The nest goes black entirely, the green blinking light restarts and I go straight back to step 1 above.

Anyone have similar issues?  Perhaps Google nest support could actually provide real answers instead of referring to instructions that make no difference.  It appears to be a software failure (and hopefully not a planned obsolescence) as I have had this thermostat for 5+ years and the forums seem to all reporting identical issues at the same time.

Also own a gen 2 , no issues on this end.   Are the connections solid? Corrosion on wiring can cause low/no power .   What is the voltage reading when it is on the wall..should be around 3.89(this can be checked in the nest app under technical information).

I think nest support is the best option here, as we are simply community members trying to help!

I don't think I answered your original question: yes I removed the wires from the mounting plate and reinserted.  It's not an issue and the initial troubleshooting issue I started with 6+ weeks ago was to check input voltage which was within the recommended range.  The issue truly started with wifi failing, troubleshooting said because the unit didn't have enough battery power which devolved into the unit apparently not charging which seemed to be related to the battery.  Replaced battery which is uber easy and now won't work without being connected to a computer (won't even charge on a wall USB charger that is known to work on other devices).

Hey folks,
It looks like we haven't heard back from the OP so I'm going to go ahead and lock the thread. If you have any further questions or concerns, feel free to create a new thread.

The product no longer works when connected to the wall.  It boots once it is connected to my Mac via Mini USB.  It "mounts" and powers up but has no functionality whatsoever when removed from the computer connection.
