Nest Thermostat Generation 4 wifi

duhaas
Community Member

I have several google devices throughout the house.

  • doorbell
  • outdoor cameras
  • google home

When I go to discover the new Thermostat, it will detect it, it will allow me to configured the fact that I use natural gas/forced air/test power and then it goes to connect to wifi and it constantly stalls out. I’ve already returned/replaced the device once, thinking maybe it was a device problem.

The home app on ios will show “connecting to joining device” and eventually stall out, the animation will actually freeze and I have to force close the app. I’m at a loss on what to do, I had a gen3 device had no issues getting it connected to wifi. I have unifi access points all throughout the home, not concerned about wifi coverage.

Hi @duhaas!

Thanks for reaching out to the community. I am sorry that you are having issues trying to connect the Nest Learning Thermostat 4 Generation to the WiFi, but no need to worry; help is here.

We appreciate all of your previous troubleshooting efforts to connect with our community. I need to know a few things about your thermostat in order to provide you with a better resolution.

  • What Nest thermostat model do you have? For your reference, you can check out this article on How to Tell Which Nest Thermostat You Have.
  • Does the thermostat display show any error codes or messages?
  • When did the issue first occur?
  • When was the thermostat installed?
  • "What is the make and model of your HVAC equipment?
  • How long did you charge the thermostat with a USB cable?
  • Do you see a blinking LED light? If so, is it red or green?
  • Is your thermostat still offline?
  • Is your network 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz?

I'll be waiting for your response; any additional details you can provide will be helpful.

Best regards,

Jeremy.

Thanks. I mentioned in my post title that it's the latest, GEN4. I've tried two different ones, and they both have the same problem. I have a network that is 2.5/5GHZ. I've tried creating a new wireless network that is just 2.4, connecting my phone to it, and going through the same process and the same problem.

I've seen several people mention that if I have a nest doorbell, which I do, to try and disconnect it and try again, something about it trying to connect to it, not sure if that is a thing or not??

This device is brand new. According to the thermostat, it's getting sufficient power from the furnace, and there are no issues there.

Hi @duhaas!

I appreciate you providing the update and informing us of the information that will enable me to help you more effectively.

Please make sure your Nest Thermostat Generation 4 and the Google Home app are functioning properly. Try the following troubleshooting steps:

  • Quit and restart the Nest or Google Home app.
  • Make sure Bluetooth is on. Turn Bluetooth off, then back on to refresh the connection.
  • Restart the phone or tablet.
  • Restart the joining and assisting devices.
  • Move the joining device closer to the router, or the router closer to the assisting device.
  • Put the mobile device in airplane mode, then turn on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.
  • Try a different mobile device.
  • Restart the modem and router.
  • Reset the joining device to default.
  • Create a hotspot and try to pair again. Make sure the device connects to the hotspot this time and not the home Wi-Fi.
  • Create another structure in the Nest or Google Home app and try to add the device to the newly created structure.

Feel free to reply if you have any questions.

Best regards,
Jeremy.

How do I delete my post? I had the same problem and finally realized an extra character was added to my wifi password on my digital cheat sheet. Problem solved!
