Nest Thermostat Low Battery Issues

Jackie24
Community Member

Installed new  Nest Learning Thermostat. It had been working fine for the last 7-8 months.. Now get message low battery and can't connect to WiFi. Tried resetting and still shuts off. Tried charging on USB and device gets very warm. It’s says to put back on base but then shuts off again and still shows low battery/can't connect when put back on base.

Had an electrician address connect a C wire as I read that could be an issue with keeping the thermostat charged, but still experiencing the same problem.
Is this a defective nest or a typical problem? It is soooo hot in my house (reading at 111!) I just want my oldd, cheap thermostat back.

Hi Jackie24,

Thanks for posting here in the Community forum, and I'm sorry to hear about the situation. I want to check if you are still in need of any help. If so, please answer the following:

  1. Are you located in North America or Europe?
  2. Are there recent power outages or service work at your home?
  3. Have you inspected the thermostat display? Remove the thermostat display from its base and check if any connector pins are bent.
  4. Have you ensured that the wires are connected properly? Check if the thermostat wires are secured in their terminals and all the buttons are down.
  5. Did you use a micro-USB cable to charge the thermostat?
  6. For how long did you charge the thermostat display?
  7. For how long does the thermostat last after charging it?
  8. Also, have you checked the power readings of the battery, VOC, VIN, and lIN of your thermostat? If not, go to Settings > Technical Info > Power.

Keep us posted.

Best,

Zoe

1- North America

2- No

3- Nothing is bent

4- Electrician installed and added C wire

5- USB Cable used to charge

6- Charged at various lengths- even overnight. Will not hold charge. Base is extremely hot after.

7- screen will stay illuminated for maybe 3-5 minutes max. Seems to charge some in its own with the c wire, but only last a couple minutes after it turns on.
8- checked batter and always say “low battery”

Hi folks,

@JackAttack, thanks for the additional information. We appreciate all your efforts. Could you try using another USB cable and monitor if the issue persists?

Thanks for the help here, Zoe.

Cheers,

Renz

I tried a different cable this morning. It was blinking green and staid cool. But When I plugged the base back in, the light was red and it did not turn on at all.

Hi there @JackAttack

Thanks for keeping us in the loop. Blinking green light is a good indicator that your Nest Thermostat still has the ability to charge. Please let your thermostat charge for at least an hour before putting it back to its base. After the said time, check its power readings by going to the Settings > Technical Info > Power.

I appreciate the help, Zoe and Renz.

Kind regards,

Jenelyn

I charged the thermostat with new chord and cable for almost 2 hours. It blinked green occasionally but more red. It said to put it on its base after maybe 20 minutes but I continued to let it charge. Upon plugging it in, it read 94 in the house. I tried to scroll through to technical info but screen went dark. I did see that it still said “Low Battery.” The air stayed on for maybe 2-3 minutes and it’s now off again and the base is blinking red.
