Nest Thermostat as Temperature Sensor

dbecker72
Community Member

In my house I have 5 zones for heating (1 in finished basement, 3 on first floor, 1 second floor), but only 2 zones for cooling (first floor all zoned together and second floor).  Is there a solution where if I install a thermostat for heating that it can be used as a temperature sensor for cooling?

Hi dbecker72,

Thanks for reaching out and we're sorry for the delay.

I'd like to check a couple of things for us to further assist you. How many thermostats do you have for all your 5 zones? You can possibly use a Nest thermostat to one zone and easily manage it through the Google Home app. Using a Nest Temperature Sensor could also be another option. It is intentionally designed to be a temperature sensor and works with your Nest thermostat.

I hope it helps.

Best regards,

Ryan

So the scenario is on my first floor. I have one nest thermostat installed that controls My heat pump for the whole first floor.  I also have hot water based in floor radiant but have 3 zones for the radiant floor heat.  The central radiant floor heat zone is also the same thermostat that controls the heat pump.    If I would connect nest thermostats to the other 2 zones for heating, could they be used at remote temperature sensors for the heat pump?

Hey dbecker72,

Thanks for staying here and we're sorry for the delay.

With your description on your system, it is recommended to have a professional HVAC technician to inspect and help you on your installation.

You could check Nest Pro and they'll help you further with your installation.

Regards,

Ryan

Sorry for the delay in responding. The issue is this, my first floor has one thermostat that controls a heat pump, but that thermostat only controls 1/3 of the radiant floor heating. The other two thirds are on separate thermostats. I would like to use a combination of heat pump and radiant floor heating , use the heat pump until it's about 25° outside, then use the radium floor heating which is heating oil based. I can control the heat pump from the central thermostat, but the existing radiant floor heat for 2/3 of the house has separate thermostats. Is there a way to make all the thermostats communicate?
