Nest Thermostat - humidity measurement

Can someone explain to me how the Nest thermostat measures humidity? More specifically, is it done via return air in the main HVAC unit or is it measured at the thermostat, locally?

Thanks for reaching out — sorry for the delay. 

The Nest Thermostat uses its own sensors to measure the temperature and humidity readouts.
