Nest Thermostat is Overcooling

I have a this 3rd Generation Nest Thermostat https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0131RG6VK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1

It was purchased on Feb 24, 2018 for $228 and the technical details on the thermostat itself show that it is "Model Display 3.4" and "Software version 6.2.27".

It does appears to have stayed consistently up-to-date as of 8/10/2024.

I have had much trouble with it since it was originally purchased, despite the high reviews for it on Amazon.

The trouble is that I can't stop it from continuing to cool much lower temperatures than the 78 degrees that it is set to not go under.

Due to the fact that the thermostat is located above the return on the inside wall between the inside of the house and the Garage, the actual inside temperature is cooler than 78 degrees, so anything cooler for the thermostat setting is way to cool inside of the house.

I have looked at all the settings and confirmed that all the automatic fan schedule stuff is off as well as anything else that might cause it to misbehave, and yet I still have this issue of overcooling.

Suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Hi tptxdev,

Thanks for reaching out to the community! I'm sorry to hear that your Nest Learning thermostat is overcooling. Let's try to fix this!

To gather more information, I’d like to ask the following:

  • Do you have a conventional or heat pump system?
  • Does this inconvenience occur for both heating and cooling, or just cooling?
  • Have you received any error messages on the thermostat?
  • When was the last maintenance and cleaning service performed on your HVAC system?
  • Is this the first cooling season using the thermostat? If so, did heating work correctly during the winter?
  • Could you please share a picture of your current thermostat wiring?

In the meantime, you can try these steps:

  • Perform a hard reset: This can help recalibrate the temperature sensor. To do this, press and hold the thermostat down until the screen turns off (about 10 seconds), then release.
  • Reset schedule: Go to Settings > Reset > Schedules to delete all scheduled settings. For reference, see this article: Restart or reset a Nest thermostat.
  • Enable Sunblock: Direct sunlight on the thermostat can cause inaccurate temperature readings. If your thermostat is in direct sunlight, try to relocate it or enable the Sunblock feature. You can check out the following article: Learn about Sunblock and how to change settings.

Let me know how it goes.

Best regards,

Jenniffer
