Nest Thermostat switching on during the night

Mitch_K
Community Member

My heating keeps coming on during the night when it shouldn't.

On my heating schedule is set as:

00:30hrs - 18 degrees

06:45 - 20 degrees

07:45 - 21.5 degrees

11.30 - 20 degrees

16:00 - 21.5 degrees

 23:30 - 20 degrees

These settings have been copied & pasted to each day

I keep finding the heating on in the middle of the night (eg: 4.15 am), with the display showing heat set to 21.5 degrees.

Looking at the 'history' on the app, it shows a 21.5 setting at around 2:00am, and tapping on that it shows a note: "Schedule set by Mitch K"

I can't see it in the schedule of any day, I've never (deliberately, at least) set it to increase during the night and I just don't know where it's getting that instruction.

I've tried deleting all scheduled settings and reset them from scratch, but it's still happening.

Could anybody please help me solve this?

Thanks in anticipation

Hi Mitch_K,

Thank you for reaching out to this community. I’m sorry to hear your heating system is activating unexpectedly overnight. I'd be glad to help.

I appreciate you have taken action by performing some troubleshooting steps. To effectively assist, could you please answer these questions?

Any more information you may give will be beneficial.

Best regards,

Daniel

Hi Daniel, thanks for your help.

It's a 3rd gen thermostat.

I'm really not sure when this started happening, it's a second home, so we only use it for short, infrequent visits.

Nothing has been changed in any settings - the schedule was set a long time ago and I've had no reason to even look at it until this issue occurred

I appreciate your help

Best wishes

Mitch

Hey Mitch_K,

Thank you for the updates. To effectively isolate the issue, let's proceed with the following troubleshooting steps."

  • Go to Settings > Nest Sense > Auto Schedule. Select No and then tap Done.
  • Go to Settings > Eco. Then, under Heat to and Cool to, select one and turn the dial until you see Off. Finally, tap Done.
  • Go to Settings > Home Away Assist. Select Stop Using.
  • Finally, go to Settings > Reset > Schedule > Reset and turn the ring to reset.

Implement these instructions and let me know if they were helpful.

Regards,

Daniel

I'm not present at the property for a week to test properly, but I see differences in choice/options as you describe:

Auto schedule is simply off or on (has always been off)

Eco settings only has a single slider to set a temperature

Home away is also simple on/off and has always been off

Again, I appreciate your help

....and I don't see an option to 'Reset' amongst my settings

Are these settings in the app, or on the physical thermostat?

Hi Mitch_K,

I appreciate you staying informed with me. These settings configurations are only available in the physical thermostat.

Thanks for clarifying, Daniel.

I'll try this on Saturday.

I followed the steps above

After this, looking at the 'history' in the app, I can see two events that are not in my schedule:

1, around 2.00am  - 20 degrees "set by your adjustment" - Everybody was asleep, no adjustments were made.

2. around 4.00am - 21.5 degrees "Schedule set by Mitch K" - there is no such setting in my schedule.

This is wasting a lot of gas/money

I'll be grateful for any help

Hi Mitch_K,

Thank you so much for keeping me updated. To continue providing further assistance, let's do a factory reset. This step will erase personal settings and return the thermostat to its original state. Navigate to Settings, select Reset, and finally All Settings; turn the ring to complete the process. To learn more information about this process, check out this article: Restart or reset a Nest thermostat.

Please let me know how it goes.

Hello again

I performed a reset and then restarted, entering all the settings.

First night worked perfectly, but then on the second night, at around 4.00am, the heating came back on.

Looking at the history, it says schedule set by me - there is no setting in the schedule to raise the temperature at that time.

This is very cobf and I'll be grateful for any further help

Thanks in anticipation

Best wishes

Hi Mitch_K,

Thank you for getting back to me. I appreciate that you have taken action by performing the troubleshooting steps above. To isolate the situation, could you please perform a factory reset again, then complete the setup process only on the thermostat without connecting to the wifi network? Keep an eye on whether the same situation persists after performing this step.

Let me know how it goes.

Best regards,

Daniel

Thanks again for your help, Daniel.

How, then, would I set the temperature schedule, if the thermostat is not on WiFi?

Hey Mitch_K,

Thanks for letting me know! With this thermostat’s model, you can manually set your temperature schedule. For your reference, review this article: Temperature schedules for the Nest Learning Thermostat. Please ensure the date and time are set up correctly on the thermostat to follow the desired schedules.

Hello again Daniel, thanks for your patience.

I performed a reset without connecting to WiFi and set a simple heating schedule.

After 3 nights, it seems to be operating to that schedule, without any deviation in the middle of the night. This is encouraging! 🤞

I'm going to leave all the settings as they are to test a little longer, but can I reconnect to WiFi at some point? The remote operation is the main reason for installing nest.

I appreciate your help and advice

Best wishes

Hi Mitch_K,

I appreciate you staying informed with me. It’s great to know that the tips have worked to solve the situation and the thermostat is working as we expected, so please reconnect the thermostat to the Wi-Fi network. If possible, try to uninstall and reinstall the Nest app, then set up the thermostat again.

Let me know how it goes.

Daniel
